Gimme arguments why gaming on Mac Mini is a bad idea

Babyballable

My friend wants to jump into PC gaming. Yey. I made a nice list of components, but he saw a video of someone playing BF3 on Mac Mini (in shitty resolution with about 10 fps...) So instead of building a decent gaming rig he wants to buy Mac Mini and install windows in it....

Help me convince him that this is a terrible idea.

Mac's aren't terrible. I can game on medium settings on my Macbook Pro just fine. They're just not tuned for gaming.

Intel graphics are terrible for gaming, much better can be built for $600, its a mac, terrible cooling and much more. The only thing the mac mini has going for itself is the fact that it has a good looking case. Thats it.

Here is a list,

horrible cooling, no chance of overclocking

laptop parts arent as powerful as full sized parts

you can never upgrade

apple give you free software to justify the price, installing windows is like halving the value

if it breaks then you have to pay apple instead of replacing it yourself for a cheaper price

cant handle as many screens at once

it doesnt help teach you anything about computers compared to how much making one would

and finally the one we had at my previous school caught fire due to overheating

Bad onboard GPU, other than that there's to be honest not much wrong with it. It's perfectly capable of running old not-so-intensive games, but it's by no means meant for gaming. He will get much more spending the same money on hardware and building it himself (or have you build it). With the Mac Mini you're paying for the form factor not for the hardware, and while it's a very convenient little machine, it's not much more than that.

Wait,  woah Woah wOah WOah woAh wOAh woaH, slow down a minute.

He wants to buy a mac mini. Then install windows on it....

>He wants to buy hardware and install windows on it.

^ use this line. This is what he is doing. Buying overpriced oem hardware + the price of windows when he could buy better hardware of equal price from manufacturers?

If he wants a small form factor then get the man a prodigy build. Otherwise there is no other valid argument for buying WORSE hardware (because that's what he's doing. He's not buying a mac because he is replacing the OS) when he could have a decent PC.

tell him the computer lacks the raw performance for basic computing.

or

write it on a piece of paper and tie it on a big rock, call it "fact" and throw it at him.

I guess that is a pro-reason ;)

and finally the one we had at my previous school caught fire due to overheating

cooling is perfectly fine for the components & I'd say that most prebuilt systems aren't oc'able

Up until Haswell, Laptop CPUs where pretty much Desktop-CPUs or the otherway around.

you don't have to pay anything while under warranty

You can actually connect 3 screens to one mac mini ;)

I think Mac Mini is a bit overpriced for what it offers. Also they still haven't updated it yet with haswell cpus (!)

If he mainly wants to game, built him a pc.

Well try running three 1080p videos on the mac mini, it cant keep up(intel hd 4600). Warranty is great and all but apple are quite weird with some of there policies

Your friend can't infer from the video that it's a bad idea for gaming?
