Pixel/Pixel 2 vs S8

I am going to get a new phone this summer and I am really stuck with choices.  I was going to get the Google Pixel but just before I bought it the S8 was released and it is kinda amazing;however, I am extremely scared of all the glass ( curved front and back too) and I am very clumsy with phones to begin with. I also know the Google Pixel 2 is just around the corner a couple of months max. I know that the S8 is probably the best smartphone around. I am thinking should I wait  for the Pixel 2 to see how it holds up against the S8 ? Also to see whether the new Pixel will be more friendly for someone as clumsy as I am? I know I can just get a case for the S8 but still super fragile and I loved the Pixel design so much if only I would bought it earlier.

My girlfriend has a Pixel, one of my co-workers have the S8, standard size on both. Between those, I'd get the Pixel if only for the feel of it. Was not a fan of the glass on the S8 and it's small in person unless you opted for the bigger model. By contrast, the Pixel feels nice in the hand.

 

From a technical standpoint, the S8 is the better phone. But..since phones are devices you have to feel to operate, I wouldn't sacrifice that. It's kinda like having 2 gaming PCs where one has the edge in FPS for gaming (Intel), while the other (AMD) build has a mechanical keyboard instead of a squishy membrane. The overall feel can not be ignored.

 

Phone I use is the Nexus 6p and it's basically a "phablet". Girlfriend's Pixel does feel nice and personally, I wanna replace my 6p for a Pixel2.

I completely agree with what you are saying ; the feel is most important for me since lately the specs are so close between smartphones especially on the top end of the spectrum. I have held both phones in my hand and I do admit that the S8 feels ,let's say, more exciting but I get the feeling I will spend a lot more time afraid of breaking it that I would like too.

Your comment helps a lot since you seem to have first hand experience with both phones. I also wonder if I am going to buy like within the next 2 weeks does your wife's pixel seem to be lagging far behind in comparison to the S8 , since I might have to choose right away S8 or Pixel.I would hate to wait for the Pixel 2 and find out they changed  the design that I love and then go back to getting the Pixel

What is your current phone?

 

I have the Google Pixel XL and really like it. My other phone is a Galaxy S7 Edge for work. Friend has a S8. Out of all the phones I prefer the Pixel as my daily driver. I however really like a few of the standout features of the Samsung phones. Samsung Pay is amazing if you are into any type of electronic payments. Being able to use the NFC and MST in the phone to replace or take place of cards is really handy. Honestly. 

 

But, the constant updated stock android of the Pixel is good too. Nice and clean. Either way, if you can get an unlocked version if you get the Galaxy to avoid the bloatware a carrier puts on the phone. 

 

Side note...if you have a half way decent smart phone to trade in Samsung has a current promotion on their website for trade in if you buy a Galaxy phone. For example for me an unlocked S8+ would be about $380 if I traded in my S7 Edge. May be worth looking at.

yeah but should I wait for the pixel 2 to decide or is it just safer to go for the s8

I would go for the S8. I am going to jump on the S8 offer on the website with a older smartphone laying around here as a trade in. The Pixel XL/Pixel 2 will be a great phone, but also have a really premium price to go with it. Are you able to take advantage of the deal? or are you needing to go through a carrier to finance?

I've heard some really good reviews about the pixel especially since they have upgraded their camera quality. I have an S7 now, but when the time comes I'm looking forward to getting a pixel unless their will be a great deal on the S8.

Are you buying outright or going through a carrier? That alone might make someone suggest something different.

Personally, all things equal in terms of payment, I'd wait for the Pixel 2. You said summer, so I'm assuming closer to the end of summer is when you'll be purchasing a device? That's right around the time the new Pixel will be released, and there will likely be price discounts on the current model if that ends up being the one you'd rather have.

 

What about these phones have you considering them? No interest in the Essential PH-1? It kind of combines the screen of the Samsung and the build of the Pixel. It's also supposed to be quite strong (titanium and ceramic).

Pricing wise I will be buying outright so carrier deals and stuff don't apply to me. You're correct about me buying towards the end of the summer if I am going with either the Pixel or S8 ;however, if I don't I will not be able to buy until end of the year.
I was excited once the Essential PH-1 was announced. I agree it combines a lot of the good from both phones, but I don't know how the removal of the headphone jack is making me feel and I don't know whether I will be able to get my hands on one either as I don't live in the US.If I will be able to get my hands on one my options might open up a bit.  For now it seems I will just patiently wait for more info regarding the Pixel 2

Yeah if I had the offer I would toom but I will be buying just outright so I will be getting the phone I like more

How does that work? If you can buy it then, wouldn't you still have that money to buy in the fall?

Ah, I'm not in the same grouping. I don't see an adapter as a huge deal breaker, since you can just tape it to the headphones and it's essentially the same as plugging in a 3.5mm jack.

I will have the money in the fall but usually when getting new stuff I don't buy outright because I like to wait a month or two for reviews and people to have used it to start reporting major issues , what they hate about the phones after sometime with it ,any problems that would let's say put me off cough "Note 7" cough, so if the release date of the Pixel 2 is similar to the Pixel then we are talking about October; add a month or two its December.

And regarding the 3.5mm jack , I will gladly accept removing it , if they are gonna do something as useful with the space

Most major issues won't show after only a couple of months, they usually take longer. The Note7 scale issue is pretty uncommon, and even then, since you're buying new you have a warranty for that kind of issue.

Yeah but Samsung eventually had to recall every unit of that phone ; even with the warranty why the hassle; I don't mind waiting a couple of months. I get a chance of getting a slightly cheaper phone , and maybe I get to find out some problems from early adopters. It's a win-win situation for me. I will be closely watching the Essential and Pixel 2 to decide which I get.
