So they are "cheating" by using their core speed? Maybe I misunderstood but it seems like it would be pretty hard to "cheat" at a benchmarking program unless they found a way to code the actual software of the program to release false information.

The only time you will ever benchmark is while benchmarking... if they deem it's not going to damage or overheat the cores then who cares. If the engineers and team decided the phone shouldn't be running "full tilt" for other things that may be running for longer periods of time, then good for them for preventing damage to their hardware.

I've read the article and it seems the main point here is that this is solid evidence that this phone will simply not compare to any other flagships releasing at this point in time due to their cheating. I would be surprised if they don't go out of business after this scandalous act!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, no? If you think benchmark scores are the go-to deciding factor for your phone then cool. Do I have to look at benchmarks before I buy a phone?

 

Also, I just don't consider this cheating unless OnePlus somehow rigged the actual benchmarking software. They can do what they want with their hardware. (If that means detecting certain software and TURBOCHARGING their cores then good for them)

 

A TL:DR would be nice for those who don't want to scroll through all the text, and some isn't even legible for night theme.

Benchmarks are a constant, they run a specific task and finish.

Users can obviously open up snapchat, youtube, reddit, 2 games and beat the crap out of their phone, so it's understandable OnePlus doesn't want the chip running at the full potential w/o throttling for what could be 8 hours if the cat decides to play with the phone and keep it from idling.

The truth is that it works incredibly fast, wether cheating or not is morally okay for a small manufacturer (because big manufacturers never cheat...cough, cough...), this phone is still gonna be a flagship killer and match those of the Essential Phone, Google Pixel 2 and iPhone 8 in terms of speed.

 

The midranger im hoping for this year tough is the ZTE Axon 8, man if it is what the Axon 7 was in audio and improves upon all else, i dont see any competition for it.

 

Oh and this phone is gonna rekt really hard some Samsung Note 8 booty if it is half of what the V20 was, just even better:

I have read the article. I do not see anything about it removing thermal restrictions. Someone is worried that it might do that, but if previous benchmark cheating is to go by then it does not.

What it does is set the CPU to always be at 100% frequency, and that's it (at least for the old cheats). That gives an advantage because there is a quite big (for a CPU at least) delay between changing CPU states. I don't have any solid numbers but my guess is that it's like 100ms or more.

Since a lot of benchmarks consist of a mix of different tests the CPU will downclock itself at several points during a run, and then it has to ramp itself up again (normally).

So the average frequency for the CPU in a benchmark run will be quite a bit lower than what the chip is actually rated for. The cheat makes it so that the average CPU frequency during the benchmark run is the max the chip is rated for.

 

I very much doubt it removes thermal or power limits since previous cheating attempts did not do that. I think the whole thing is rather harmless as well. It totally is cheating, but if you know which chip is in the phone you will know roughly what it will perform like anyway (as far as CPU and GPU goes). This cheat shouldn't change the results that much either.

Of course not, just like with SLI/Crossfire, you only gain about 1.5-1.6x the performance with two of them.

I think it would actually be more like four way sli/crossfire because you would often get negative scaling.
