My R9 390x broke and I got my Money back - What GPU should I buy now?

le_NoD

tl;dr GPU broke -> got my money(400€) back-> budget ~700€ +/-10% -> want new GPU -> maybe better overall performance

My Build

CPU: Intel Core i5 6600K 4x 3.50GHz So.1151

CPU-Cooler: Scythe Mugen 4 PCGH-Edition (German Special Edition)

RAM: 16GB (2x 8192MB) Corsair Vengeance LPX black DDR4-3000 DIMM CL15-17-17-35 Dual Kit

GPU: 8GB Sapphire Radeon R9 390X Nitro

PSU: EVGA Nova 850B2 G2 Semi-Modular retail (80+ bronze)

  1. Monitor: 27" Asus MG278Q - 1440p - 144Hz - FreeSync

Things I do

I often play CS:GO, PUBG, HOTS or Overwatch + I casualy raid in WOW(3 Eves a Week)

When there is some time left, i like to play games like Witcher 3 or Fallout 4

I like editing video material I am recording via ReLive, OBS or my GoPro3 BlackEdition

Occasionally i am streaming some WOW or PUBG

Performance I am expecting

I would love to play every esports game at atleast 144 fps - 1440p, details are not that important to me

AAA Games like Witcher or Fallout are fine in 60fps - 1440p, the more details and fps the better

Streaming in 60 fps 900p/720p is nice to have

My current Situation

The R9 R90x is the most inefficient GPU there is, i guess, in terms of W/fps, soo it was pretty loud and not really well performing.

I got an AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series GPU from a friend, soo I have a couple of weeks till i need that new hardware.

->I am glad it broke and that I got the full refund<-

I want to step up a little with a budget of 700€ +/-10%

The CPU is stable overclocked @4.6 GHZ atm.

The Problem I have right now is that my Monitor has FreeSync i guess.

I need a new GPU and some pro tips on decision making and possibilities I have!

I will try to answer all ur questions!

Thanks for participating :)

P.S. I'm thinking about getting a 1080/1080ti atm or waiting for vega

Used 980 Ti, new 1070, or get a 1080. Or wait for Vega and see if 1080 Ti prices drop. AMD wise, there's basically nothing on the market thanks to miners.

I would say to go for a Gtx 1080, it provides better performance and is much more power efficient.

This is a hard choice indeed, go with the GTX 1080 Ti, or the Vega that promises to beat the 1080/Ti. Personally, I would go for the 1080 Ti, as it is only 1440p, and if you are planning to upgrade soon to a better monitor it will support even that.

My problem is the CPU right now. I dont know if it is worth to go for the 1080ti.

Is the CPU capeable of bottlenecking the 1080ti? Or is it just a waste of money for now?

The FreeSync issue isn't that bad i guess if I can always VSync at 60hz or 144hz.

cheers

Depends if your playing at 4K doesn't matter that much.

You don't want freesync for e-sport games anyways. Waiting for Vega... Kinda pointless at this point IMHO.

I would go for GTX 1080.

Soo let's say I'll purchase a 1080ti, which is the best in terms of cooling and noise?

Do u guys have a quality comparison video of the aftermarked 1080TIs I can watch?

At the moment my favored Cards are the MSI or EVGA ones

Thx for the help so far

Sucks that your gpu broke, glad you got the full refund. If I was in that situation and since you've a Freesync display, i'll grab a 470/570 ( good luck finding them tho ) and keep the extra cash for Vega and down the road switch the i5 for a Ryzen.

Why? Why switch 6600k to Ryzen? wow, csgo etc prefer faster cores not more cores. It's a waste of money.

470/570? Again, waste of money. Vega is not going to be better than 1080/1080 TI... So why wait? For Freesync? I have G-sync in my monitor... I used it once. IMHO it's better to lower the setting than turning g-sync ON.

I would vote for EVGA. Amazing customer service, better resale price/chance because of their Guest RMA. SC2/FTW3 have a lot of things going well for it... I mean, 9 thermal sensors? cooling is very good too.

I've a G-sync monitor as well and I cant live without it, but thats me, buying a freesync monitor to then switch to nvidia cuz you cant wait....thats a waste. Regarding the i5, OP said that he also wants to play AAA games, now, like I said "down the road" a better cpu might a better leverage of the kind of gpu that he wants to buy.

freesync doesn't add much premium to the cost of monitors. A waste is buying a cheap and pretty bad GPU (for his use) just to wait for something that MIGHT be good.

AMD will be shooting themselves in the foot if Vega aint competitive with Nvidia's current high end offering and might as well not even release it. This comes down to taste thou, cuz if he cant live without  adaptive refresh, after being used to it and  wants it once again, he will have to buy a G-sync monitor. instead of just getting a low tier card to hold him at night and then buying Vega and still using his current monitor's freesync, thats me tho but I do respect your suggestion and  OP if you're going the 1080/ti route, go Evga/Asus ( lean more towards evga )

The thing is do i really miss out on freesync if im provided enough fps to VSync. I mean sure i love those smoothe framerates between 45 - 75 fps( as Ekst4zy mentioned im not really using it frequently aswell) but isn't locking it to 60 the same deal if I can.

I kinda know the 1080ti is a bit much of a GPU for my purposes and maybe CPU.

But atm im kinda MEGAhyped  to buy a new GPU which could be the best there is rightnow, if I spend those extra 200€.

And BTW im not planning on getting a new monitor.

Thank u guys for UR opinions
