Hi there,

I'm totally new to hardware. I’m currently building my first PC which I will be using for work in 3D animation/dynamics/GPU rendering/large scale photo editing/VFX. This will be a work machine only - no gaming.
Here is the software i use:

Cinema 4D
 - Octane renderer
 - Redshift renderer
Side FX Houdini
After Effects
Premiere
Photoshop

I am aware that flaunting very expensive PC Part Picker lists for the sake of it is a thing on these forums but this is not the case here. This build is built with future expansion in mind, I want to be adding to it if I need something in the future rather than buying from scratch. The components have been picked by looking at various sources from the net and even though I think I have filtered well through the hype-word marketing shit-storm of the hardware world, still, at times I’ve gone for a faster of model of this or faster model of that and even gone for a familiar brand name just to be on the safe side, purely because I don’t know these things and want to be getting value for money. Could you please point out anything wrong that you see -  conflicting components, potential bottlenecks, any parts where I can save money, and any other suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated! If anyone has built their PC with some of these parts and can advise on potential pitfalls during the build; 'you need this cable or this extra part' etc this will also be helpful as I will be building it on my own and have never done so before.

Here is the list:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/VCK3Gf

Here are is my justification for the parts which might help:

Corsair 900D
Large case for expansion in the future and also helps with prevention of overheating.
ASUS X99-E WS USB 3.1
Has 40PCI lanes with x16 on each. Looks great for future expansion.
Intel i7-6850K
6 core is enough as all renderers are moving to GPU rendering and in general, in animation, single core performance is valued over how many cores + Allows up to 40pci lanes also allows 128GB RAM for future expansion.
I know AMD are bringing new ones out but I’m not interested in them.
ASUS STRIX 1080 Ti (x2)
Just like the FE but has fans which will keep it cool so no additional GPU cooling needed in this case.
Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB DDR4 RAM 2400Mhz
Trusted brand. Not the fastest out there but CPU can’t support more than 2400.
Kraken X62 AIO
Seems to have the best reviews and said to be quiet.
1TB M.2 SSD
Some of the software I use caches to memory and by default it will go to the SSD, hence the 1TB. I know I can manually tell it to cache to the HDD but there times when you don't want it to do this.
WD Red 2TB HDD (x2, one for back-up)
Have a WD already and I’m happy with it, also RED are meant to be very quiet + Back up drive is important, as these will be work related files.
Optical Drive
They all look the same, any specific recommendations or things to look for?
Wireless Card
The motherboard doesn’t have WI-FI. All cards seem to be the same but any recommendations?
Windows 10
Home? Pro? Which one do I need?
Corsair 1200W PSU
1200 Overkill? I got this calculation from here: https://outervision.com/b/XRZ1fm
I’ve heard going overboard with the Voltage will cause your components to not work to their full potential- will this be an issue here?

This forum is the last stop before purchasing and I’m looking to leave no stone unturned, so feel free to pick apart the list as much as possible -  again many thanks in advance!

Overkill is overkill. No need to spend £5K on a build. And the 1200w is overkill don't use the calculators.

That is overkill, 850W is enough

PSUs with higher wattage** (not voltage) won't do anything harmful

Do not make a 6850k/x99 build right now. the Core I9's and X299 platform is weeks away and will be a great deal better investment (or threadripper if that is more your thing)

Not sure where you heard that, but its garbage advice. having more available wattage does not reduce how powerful your components are. it MAY very slightly reduce the efficiency at which your PSU converts its energy from the wall, resulting in 1-2% more energy burned (or more efficiently depending on where you are on the curve), but it will not affect performance positively or negatively.

Only Kaby-X is stupid, and if OP doesn't want Threadripper the 7820X is a great 8core option and the 7800X is a good 6core.

Also with X299 you get more features like Optane

Linus was overly dramatic. everyone is being overly dramatic about X299. It will be a phenomenal CPU lineup for those with the dough to buy it.

You need to form your own opinions on things based on the information out there... don't just blindly accept what some youtube entertainer tells you because hes just trying to get views. Linus is very tech saavy and definitely very smart... but he is also throwing shit at intel just to see what sticks because he believes that is what his viewers want to hear (I mean he does have a few fair points, but most of it is just inflated drama for the sake of youtube).

I agree with him. Intel is over their heads with the AMDs new "Threadripper" lineup. Even the board manufactures are saying they have no clue what Intel is doing. There will be most likely less PCI-E lanes (Threadripper will have 64 lanes), let alone $2K for a CPU and memory will be an issue, I garantee it.

AMD are winning the race..

Wait on X299, I get that it sounds stupid. But at least we have a variety of choices.

Wait for benchmarks on x299 processors and then we will help you. Because then extreme editions at the moment just make zero sense to buy. Also wait on threadripper.

Wouldn't be better to wait threadripper ?

x299 is shitted with RAID keys and threadripper will be cheaper

no its not. it is very sensible (assuming there is an overclocking frequency boost over 7700k, which there should be).

No, it doesn't make sense because at that point buying an AIO or loop and delidding would give you better OCs than the expensive X299 mobos will. Plus you can't use half the DIMM slots or even the PCIe lanes of the X299 boards. WTF is the point?

No, it doesn't make sense because at that point buying an AIO or loop and delidding would give you better OCs than the expensive X299 mobos will. Plus you can't use half the DIMM slots or even the PCIe lanes of the X299 boards. WTF is the point?

This thread is not about X299 vs threadripper. go make a thread about that if you wish to discuss it and I will tell you why your argument doesn't make sense. In the meantime lets help @vlb6 with his needs.

Why are you not interested? What is wrong with them?

With this build, you're saving yourself at least £640. You're getting more cores.

Hey man,

this is brilliant! - thanks for taking the time to help here!

I don't know much about AMD I am just aware that the platform has it's quirks (but like any for that matter) so just went for something I had used before

Only prob here is that I have 16GB at the office and it is a struggle - 64 is what I need preferably even 128 (somewhere down the line) which this motherboard doesn't support
but I can always find some other options for these.

BUT, once again, big  thank you for this - AMD might be a noteworthy path, I will do more research.

for your budget and desires... you seriously need to wait for threadripper or a core i9. You really shouldn't be looking into Ryzen or X99 IMO.

Great build but couldn't he get Windows for $30 on Kinguin ?

And you can put up frequency of RAM. No other complains

If its critical then he should get Ryzen but if he can handle with old rig a bit then Threadripper is way to go. X299 wil be most avoided Intel platform in history. (My Prediction)

Say something goes wrong with Windows and I need to contact support, would I still be able to do that with Kinguin?
I originally set the frequency to 2400 as this is the max the CPU can support, or maybe this is just a guideline? - source here:
