Help with live view and recording on PC with DSLR

I need help figuring out how to hook up my DSLR (Canon Rebel SL1/100D) to my PC for live monitoring, using it as an OBS input for twitch streaming, and shooting photos and video straight to my PC from the camera as well if possible. I tried using the Canon EOS Utility software which supposedly could handle some of that, but it doesn't seem to work at all (when I launch it, the only option is to connect a camera over wifi, which my camera can't do).

So I have very little idea where to start on this and how feasible it will be. Do I use the USB connector or the mini HDMI? What software should I use? Do I need special hardware like a capture card or something (hope not because I'm broke)? Thanks.

Is the usb cable plugged in? You need the usb cable. From what I rember the quality over usb wasn't that great, and the res was lower.

You can use a capture card for a better quailty, but there not cheap, as you have noticed.

No I didn't have the USB plugged in, but it was literally just one option for wireless with nothing else. I'll try that though.

Can I perhaps get better quality with HDMI? I think I remember Paul's Hardware saying he was using HDMI to his PC from one of his cameras a while ago.

plug the usb cable in, it works best that way.

HDMI on most cheap dslrs is gimped and won't show full res. on mine(7d) its a 3 by 4 image with black bars, and can't show full output res.

Well I got the monitoring working, but it kind of looks like trash... underexposed as opposed to the onboard display and really bad input lag. Definitely not suitable for capturing to OBS. Do I have any other options short of buying a capture card?

Youre welcome!

What were you planning to use the DSLR for anyways? Streaming? Recording? of its non live recording you can still record to the DSLR memory card and just sync it up in post.

Yeah I've already been using it for video and stills with the built in display which is just fine, I only wanted monitoring so I could window capture it to use for streaming.
