Hey guys, had a few questions for you regarding a few products being worth their price as of June 11 2017.

I'm planning on building a computer for my dad who mainly uses it for surfing x 10, multiple x 10 applications like autocad, Microsoft office x 10, & movies.

By "x 10" I meant he opens at-least 20 different applications at once and goes back and fourth between them a-lot.

I want to make him a compact mini-itx.

Most likely want to get him a Ncase M1.

One of my friends friend is selling his unopened sealed i7 6700k cpu for $300 CAD.

1) Is it worth it? or would you spend the extra ~$175 CAD for the i7 7700K?

Is there a massive difference between DDR3 and DDR4 ram?

I want to get him 16gb [8x2] but want to get the corsair platinum mostly for the looks.

There is a $100 CAD between ddr3 and ddr4.

2) Is it worth getting the DDR3 instead of the DDR4?

3) Is it worth spending an extra $70 CAD to grab the Asus Z270 mini-itx vs the Asus Z170i pro gaming mini-itx?

Although he doesn't need a GPU, I was planning on buying a used one (for Autocad to run smooth mostly) and wondering what the best bang for the buck card would be in today's day for buying an older card.

I want it to have HDMI 2.0 for sure.

Gtx 970? 980? 980Ti? Something else...?

4) If someone wants $150-$200 for a 970 is it worth it?

5) If someone wants $250-$300 for a 980 is it worth it?

6) If someone wants $300-$350 for a 980Ti is worth it?

7) At what price would you buy these cards for or would negotiate to? CAD.

Thanks!

For AutoCAD (Autodesk), you can get a 960 4GB or 1050 Ti since VRAM is going to be more important if he's adding textures and layers to everything.

980 Ti would be most worth it for $300, but 970 at $150 gives more bang for buck.

DDR3 being cheaper is dependent on the rest of the build.

Can you explain the ddr3 part you mentioned a little further please?

1: not worth the extra $175

2: how did you plan on using DDR3 with Skylake or Kabylake? you can use DDR3L but thats even more expensive lol

3: no

4: no

5: no

6: no

7:

970: ~$100

980: ~$150

980TI: everything bellow $270 is gotime basically.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Just because DDR3 is cheaper doesn't mean that it's "worth it" since you:

A) can't do DDR3 with Skylake (unless it's DDR3L),

B) can't use DDR4 with Haswell,

C) have to look at the cost of the overall system.

I'd get the 6700K, if it comes with a cooler, and some fast DDR4-2800 2x8GB RAM. Get a motherboard that he would like (if you're getting a windowed case) or black (with no window) with a Z170 chipset.
