A simple question, get a 7700K now, or get an i3 and buy a next gen i7 when it comes out. I am replacing a computer that is about 9 years old and dying so I will need to buy a CPU soon.

-Thanks, any help is appreciated.

So far it's up in the air when the next gen will come out. Get something now.

get a Ryzen 1600

if, like @themctipers alluded to, you play minecraft, then Ryzen will be much better than Intel, since Minecraft is CPU bound.

You can get a 6700K/7700K or R5-1600. I'd also grab some 3000MHz RAM regardless of your CPU choice.

Intel has higher IPC which is important for gaming.

Oh, it's not the minecraft, the person I'm building for has an extreme distrust towards AMD and I am just going with the flow.

well TBH both will be fine, but IDK too much about minecraft. with it's shitty optimization, I wouldn't be surprised if it was purely single threaded. so maybe a 7700K would be better, although it wouldn't be that much of an improvement

Fast ram also boosts Ryzen's IPC performance so it's really more a matter of the overall cost factoring in an Intel build with 2666mhz ram (the sweet spot for Intel imo) or Ryzen with 3200mhz ram.

Try to convince them otherwise.

if you want intel, then just get a 7700 (K)

Not really, but it does improve inter-core latency, which improves performance.

modded minecraft - my 3770k:

core 0 = 150848% usage

core 1-7 = 2% chill

20 fps too! at 2 chunks.. m i c r o b l o c k s

it purely is single threaded, it's sorta multi threaded on servers; 2/3 cores can be used.. one for world gen, one for world rendering, one for chat. but on client side, 100% single threaded (pre 1.8 i believe.. i dont know shit post 1.9)

A lot has happened between March and June. Even games that favored Intel by a huge margin like Tombraider has been patched to give Ryzen a nice boost.

edit: lol I have no idea why my mind slipped and had July

Why do you hate it?

Ryzen has pros and cons, but it delivers good performance for less, allowing people to put in a more powerful GPU in their systems.

1600 + GTX 1070 is undeniably better than 7700 + RX 580

i know there's something to do with higher clocked ram and faster IPC, but ehhh, if it's minecraft.. IPC always wins. even if its a p4 at 9ghz

Some of us like to call it deep space, but to each their own.

OP, if you're pairing an Intel CPU, give some consideration to the 6700K and 4790K, as both are very close to the performance of the 7700K, both at stock and at the average overclocks of each chip. Just be sure to get your friend some good RAM, without spending alot for little gain. If they're all close together in price, the 7700K is damn fine, asides from some thermal issues.

Because Intel sat on their ass with Kabby and offered nothing over the 6700k asides from Netflix 4K DRM and bad TIM. Reason why Ryzen is hyped (and it does have growing pains which are getting worked out each update) is because an i5 budget with i7 level performance (or greater if you do heavy workloads) is nothing to scoff at.

The fact Intel is also gimping pcie lanes in the newer chips on the lower end is also something no one should support. I'm not a fanboy either way. My 2500k lasted a long time and the 6700k build got passed to my GF when her PC was dying. At this point in time, Intel is not a very good value.

Since you need it now, I'd get the 7700k. Threadripper is another option if you can wait a month or two. Generally people purchase what they need for the present moment.

TR might flop, who knows... I'm going to wait for benchmarks before making that decision though.
