Make sure you have accounts on third-party sites like GOG and the Humble Store and let them send you promotional e-mails. Every so often they promote a major sale or event with a free retail game. I've been offered the first two Witcher games for free from GOG several times.

 

Additionally EA Origin has a program called "On the House" where they just give away a retail game for free. They're only free for a limited period of time (though if you claim it you keep it forever), but in the past they have had Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Battlefield, and Dead Space games available for free that way. Not the newest ones, of course, but sometimes that's a blessing.
