Two GPUS, but one plugged in?

Hello! (My second question for today :3)

 

I was wondering if it would be safe to have two graphics cards in a PCI-e slot each, but only have one card powered through the PSU? 

I currently have a GTX 1080FTW2 and a GTX 780 RE. I'd LOVE to have two gpu's in there (even though the one is OP) just for the looks because I LOVE those LED's.

Is it safe to have only my 1080 powered through the PSU, or will I experience any latency, power-drops, and other side effects etc.? 

 

EDIT: Monitor running off the GTX 1080 with no problems so far... Afraid to stress test. 

I'm only keeping the GTX 780 plugged in for the looks of the LED's. Looks friggen awesome though!

It might break your motherboard because the GPU will try to draw too much power from the slot. Not sure if there is any protection.

It should be fine, obviously the one that isnt fully powered wont work though. 

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

why don't you just plug it in and use it for folding or boinc?

HIGHLY considering it. I used BOINC with my old GTX 960 but when I got my new GTX 1080, BOINC stopped processing :/. All my processing times and downloading times were free but it said "nothing to process".

Go into the BIOS. Don't ask me which page, because I can't possibly know every BIOS out there. 

 

You might be able to find it under power savings or ECO settings, though.

I don't think that this will be hard to fix. 

Just do it, your main pc performance won't be any different if you just use the 780.

BAAAAAAAD issue... After unplugging the second gpu from my system, bad things happened........ 

 

There is no picture other than mouse cursor, a spinning loading sign of 5 dots, and the bios logos. HALP. I tried resetting the bios multiple times. funny thing is that my second monitor plugged into my cpu graphics works!!! Did I fuck up my GPU?

Don't see why you just gone keep the other card plugged in and have zero issues.
