Will an MSI Ryzen mobo perform well?

5 members have voted

  1. 1. Will an MSI Ryzen mobo perform well?

    • Yes, you'll be fine.
    • No! Get an Asus motherboard!
    • Not really, a Gigabyte mobo is a better choice.
    • IMO, ASrock is the better option.

Hey guys, been reading up on Ryzen lately, as I'm planning on upgrading to it ASAP. I am pretty much a fanboy of MSI just from how their motherboards look. I love the jet black PCB, as well as the RGB integration (ASUS has got RGB as well, and Gigabyte has some nice black PCBs), but I read somewhere MSI is having issues with Ryzen? What kind of issues? Is it just a slow first post, or is every boot slow? Will it not let me OC the CPU and RAM properly? Basically, are there any major issues, or will I be fine if I get one instead of an ASUS or Gigabyte mobo?

TL;DR: What are the issues MSI mobos have with Ryzen?

MSI motherboards and AMD have always been rather ehhh or bad. Right now it is a memory thing.

Right now the only motherboards I would recommend for Ryzen is Asrock professional gaming (needs to be professional), Asrock taichi, Gigabyte gaming 5 and Gigabyte gaming 7. Those are the best motherboards for ryzen....

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Feel free to pm me if you have a question for me or quote me. If you want to hear what I have to say about something just tag me.

Takes me about 15-20 seconds to boot every time to windows with an SSD. it's not great but it's my only complaint. everything else is very nice.

(B350 PC MATE)

Personal build >  New-ish AMD main gaming setup

I've read tons of posts here about the two. You'll be fine. I'm not ballsy enough to try Beta BIOS, buy I use R7 1700x and MSI X370 Carbon Pro.

I use MSI because they seem to have a great product and price point. If I had to say best, a lot of people really like the ASUS lineup of Crosshair, but I've never used one.

Yes RAM speeds are a thing, but not. Game ender for Ryzen.

The only thing I really dislike is that Widows doesn't like Ryzen RAID drivers.

Asus and AsRock are the ones I recommend daily, always avoid MSi they are all about game marketing and little true quality and performance in my humble opinion.

Rocking Asus Prime Pro and also haven't had any headaches since day one, I know people with MSi boards on the latest BIOS that won't pass the 2666mhz ram barrier even by today.

You'd be surprized how much a thing RAM speed is with Ryzen. Even in Cinebench I get the same increase in score from a Mhz increase on the RAM, as on the CPU. In games it's more, way more. Timings are also important as at the same frequency changing them even within the same CL I can change my Cinebench score by over 30 points by just adjusting timings.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

MSI hasn't published Beta yet for all boards, but the do provide Beta BIOS.

Yes, gaming is their main push, but their products are anything but substandard.

I had ASUS once. Have friends that used to have them. MSI has great customer service if something does go wrong. Good luck with ASUS customer service.

Each brand has their tradeoffs. No one is superior. And recommendations are all going to be based on experience, bias included. One bad experience can lead someone to bash a company for 1:1,000,000,000 odds of a failed product. (Number is made up fail rate.)

Yes I know RAM speeds is a huge deal, especially in benchmarks. 2666 has been working well for me, and have found some other forms that provided insight into additional RAM clocking that I hadn't seen before and will try with those.

Interesting enough here in Brazil it is the other way around, MSi sucks at costumers support while Asus has really solid support, then again I think MSi is not manufacturing nationally yet while Asus already opened assembly lines here in Brazil which also decreased costs making the most common motherboards in Brazil.

Honestly I needed the beta bios to break 2933. Even then I had to manually adjust my VTTDDR and CPU SOC voltages.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

For motherboards, around 2% odds of DOA, 4% of something not working properly but it still booting, and 1% failing if already working before going obsolete. Odds of failure higher with more complex boards.

Get rather a new case. Consider Cooler Master MasterBox 5 White Edition with SP120 White fans on it.

I'm trying to do an upgrade for around $400. I'm saving for a new mountain bike (my other hobby), and it'll run me around $3300 to $4800 USD, so not blowing $1K+ on a computer is good (though I'll eventually get a high end gaming PC, someday...).

And as far as cases go, I'd like to upgrade to a Corsair 400c white. So maybe I should go for an ASrock and then it'll match my case when I upgrade it. And the teach does look like it has a ton of awesome features. Especially when I eventually upgrade to something like a Ryzen 7 1700.

1k should be up and running with R5 1600 + RX 580 + 16 GB @ 3200 MHz

The only $400 upgrade I can currently think of is R5 1400 + A320 Motherboard + 8 GB @ 2400-3000 MHz

It's around $417 or so for a R5 1400, B350 or cheaper X370 mobo, 8GB DDR4 300Mhz RAM, and a Seasonic M12II to replace the OEM PSU in my build. I'll see if I can get my parents to let me stretch to about $480 so I can get the Tiachi.

Only really high end ones. I've got a "super budget" bike ($700), all the bike magazines call $1500 bikes budget/entry level bikes, a $3-5K bike is a high end monster, and then factory racers who are sponsored get bikes that would be worth $7-10+K. Basically they are like supercars. They're built out of super light weight alloys and carbon fiber, use advanced shaping to lose more weight, take years of experience to get the shape (geometry) right, and are engineered to handle the high speeds you can get them up to. So compared to a Lambo or McLaren, they're pretty cheap :D
