Best Budget GPU

Hey everyone

So I'm saving up for my first build (specs down below) and I mostly plan to use it for video editing with some gaming. I currently own an HP Notebook laptop running on a dual core Intel Celeron @2.16ghz, it's absolute trash. Because of this restriction, the only game I CAN play is Minecraft at the lowest settings, and my laptop can barely handle that. My CPU of choice is the Ryzen 7 1700X for content creation (I went with the 1700X over the 1700 for the higher clock speed), but since Ryzen doesn't have onboard graphics like Intel, I need a cheap graphics card. I was looking at the MSI GT 710, just to get my PC off the ground while I save up for the GTX 1070 I want. So my question is, will the GT 710 handle the most basic games and watching movies and light workloads?

Here are the parts I have lined up:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700X

GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 1070 

Mobo: MSI B350 Tomahawk

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB 3000Mhz

Cooler: Cryorig H7

Storage: WD Blue 500gb SSD (I have a 3TB external HDD so I really don't need an inernal mechanical drive)

PSU: Rosewill 600W 80+ Bronze semi-modular (I had picked a Seasonic G but the price went up about 20 bucks)

Case: NZXT Noctis 450

HELL NO! NEVER A 710! Try going GT 730 used and even so GDDR5! ONLY GDDR5! I cant stress this enough. GDDR5 has about 40% more performance over the DDR3 Versions of the GT 730. So please dont buy the 710 ever

Nah the GT 710 will not handle even the most basic of games.

 

Spend $100 and get something like a GTX 1050 or an RX 560. Or if you're lucky you can find a 750 Ti, RX 460 for $80.

 

But don't buy a Ryzen 1700X, not when you can turn the 1700 into a 1800X just by overclocking it and you should because otherwise you're getting no value off your CPU cooler.

 

And that PSU I can guarantee is not good. Instead buy an EVGA 550W B3 which cost just $60.

I think you easily have enough budget to buy the whole computer at once, if you budget correctly. The Noctis 450 is a very expensive case for instance and there are very good, high quality cases for $55-$60 in the market. And the 1700.

I mean he is getting a 1070 soon, I would just get a cheap used card (30$ GT 730 1 GB GDDR5 FTW!). Those would work quite well until the time being and trust me the GT 730 is quite the alright card used

get a used 750ti( 50$ usually but you can bargain it down) or a rx460

Yeah I don't have a pile of cash so I'll be buying parts as I make the money and I really want to get this PC up and running, so the less expensive the video card, the better.

Either works out, when you see on userbenchmark (reliable enough for broad comparison) a supposed 377% performance increase getting the rx550 over the g710 pretty much guaranteed any thing will be a no brainer choice any RX over a GT

The option I'd rather OP went with is one where he budgeted differently and was able to get the 1070 for starters, if possible. It sounds like their budget is around $900 at first.

If the market was not so completely screwed for AMD Polaris cards, I'd say RX 470 (at pre-crypto boom pricing) is the ultimate budget card.  At the current time I can't recommend buying one though.

 

My RX 470 Red Devil is amazing for 1080p, and I bought it for only $160 last November.  Right now it's on ebay and the auction is over $260, for a used card with full disclosure.  I'm basically trading up to a Fury Nitro (which is going in my new machine) for less than $60 out of pocket.
