Hello!

Which one you guys would prefer:

  • Used PS3. Pros: Three friends of mine have that console. Larger game library. Free online. Cons: Older games. Less active online communities in most cases.
  • Used PS4 or Xbox One. Pros: Newer games. More active online community. More "future proof" - more games will be developed. Cons: Non of my friends have either of those. Smaller current game library. Online costs extra money.

Thank you!

If you want to play online with your friends get the PS3.

Otherwise, get the PS4.

Having owned all versions of the PS3 and the OG PS4 I feel qualified to answer this. Many games (mostly COD and BF) and still have an active following on PS3. The PS3 is great to play with friends and will be cheaper. Note that coming from a PC or even PS4 can be abbot of an eyesore, but most games aged well

Although it'll sound like a PCMR thing, I really don't think a PS4 is a good idea. The absolutely stupid game prices and the online subscription will really add up to the point where in a year or two a PC with more games and better hardware will be cheaper overall. We've seen a big gain in PC gaming followers this generation for a reason.

That's an F in the profile pic

Getting a PSN subscription will give some discounts on digital games occasionally, plus you get free games every month that you keep forever as long as you have a PSN Subscription - furthermore, if your sub lapses but you later renew it (say, after it's been expired for a few months), you get back those free games (You *do* lose access to the free ones while the sub is lapsed).

For Sale: Meraki Bundle

The PS Plus subscription being required for online gaming is pretty chickenshit, but if you shop around games aren't tough to find at good prices. I think I have 12 games on my PS4, and my most expensive was Horizon Zero Dawn for $50, and I only paid that much because I wanted it at launch (I have seen it as low as $35). Otherwise, my next most expensive game is Nioh which I got a couple of months after launch for $36.

You can find PSN sub cards on sale routinely, so you don't really have to pay the $50/yr fee.

Though in my case, if I'm only after PS4 games, I have a 20% off discount on anything new through Best Buy. And that stacks on top of a sale price of something goes on sale.

One thing to consider with used PS3: the PS Store often puts really good PS3 games for sale at dirt cheap prices, often for $2-$5. I have even seen deals like the Mass Effect Trilogy for $5 (I didn't buy it though because I'd rather play those games on PC).
