It depends on GPU and resolution. Anything above a GTX 1070 should be paired with an i7 at 1080p.

Well yeah but he already has an i5. Is the very small difference in frames worth the money for ani7 on an old platform?

That's an F in the profile pic

If you're only gaming then honestly your i5 is fine. Save for a bigger upgrade later

that really depends, mine wasent doing all too great even at 4.7GHz paired with my GTX 970. BDO, MC, CIV-V and anything CPU heavy will see a nice boost from an upgrade to an I7 4790K which is what i have got now.

side grade, not an upgrade.

no, sell your 970 and get an R9 Fury or better, some games dont support SLI and in some its just a broken mess.

the I7 4790K isnt really much behind the current gen once both are overclocked. with decent cooling both reach around 5GHz even and then the IPC diferance isnt that much. the I7 4790K is still a great chip and seeing as he already has the motherboard and RAM and all that its much better to get it.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

The thing someone was selling one for $275 thats why i ask about sli. I cant find any R9 Furys.

$275 is almost doubbt what you should sell a GTX 970 for, they sell used for about $120. R9 furys can be found new on Amazon for about that price lol. they are a bit of a rarer card seeing as the 980TI kind of took its shine but if you find them used they are a steal basically.

No, if he's only gaming then he should stick with his current i5. He'd be flushing money down the toilet otherwise. No reason to get a new platform in that case.

Uh, what are you talking about? This is why misinformation spreads like wildfire on here.

The higher your resolution - the less likely your cpu will be your "bottleneck". Lower resolutions are easy for graphics cards, so the limiting factor is how fast your CPU can calculate data. Higher resolutions stress the graphics card so the CPU isn't the limiting factor..

Lol what are you talking about? If he wants to upgrade or side grade he can go for the Ryzen 5 1600 or i7 4790K. although if he buys the i7 4790K he won't see a big performance increase in gaming (maybe in some heavy CPU demanding games but not overall). He can stick to his current i5 but will upgrade eventually.

Regarding your other statement:

Quote

The Ryzen 5 is better than his current i5 and will handle games much better.

The difference is negligible at best and doesn't warrant changing platforms. This really isn't up for debate, mate. It's a silly move if you're just gaming nonetheless.

If he only plays at 1080p he can just stick with the i5. But if he can get an i7 for a good price then why not upgrade it? If he wants to play at a higher resolution like 4K(which won't happen i think) he can get a 1080ti and pair it with the i7 4790K and it would handle it just fine. It's still worth to upgrade imho.
