GPU turns off when playing game

Thue500

Hi, have recently put the stock cooler back on my R9 390 from a watercooler. Every time I launch a game my GPU turns off like the fans stop spinning the screen turns blue. But the CPU and all the other stuff keeps running. Before the GPU turns off the temp is still low. Then I thought maybe the vram was getting too warm but were also on a 52-65 degree Celsius. And my PSU is big enough cause I used it before when I was water cooled.

Any ideas about the problem?

Thanks

How about watercooling it again and see if that still happens? If it still works, that means the GPU itself is fine, and likely a short on the cooler fan has triggered over-current protection. If it doesn't..... too bad...

Was it fine when you initially had stock cooler? You might not able be able to RMA it if you replaced cooler and thermal paste.

Yeah, it worked fine a first and also with the water cooler. But now it won't work under load. And I can't get an RMA as I have taken the GPU apart and broken the warranty sticker.

Was thinking too but the watercooler back on, but wanted to sell the card with the stock cooler on, and the water cooler is getting used by my CPU. And it's such a hassle to replace the stock cooler with the water cooler but good idea.

Just check that the gpu -> monitor connector is plugged in properly (hdmi, vga, dvi) and try switching it just to eliminate that option.

How are you using a gpu waterblock on cpu?

He's not. He used a Kraken G10 bracket. It's a bracket you use instead of the stock cooler to mount standard AIO coolers to a GPU. Looks like this: NZXT_Kraken_G10_02.jpg

Quote me in replies so I see them.

Just a thought, is it not working on all games or just a select one or couple?

It could simply be a driver issue, I had issues with the latest Hitman game which needed a driver from last year to work.

See if updating or rolling back/downloading a previous set of drivers does anything. It's a pain but could be a simple fix.

I will try. Have tried to just pull the cable out and plug it back in but nothing happens there. Have also tried when it lost signal to take the cable and put in the motherboards hdmi. But i will try that :)

First tried with Cities Skylines just turned off just as i launched the game. Thought it maybe was an error in that game. Then tried with CS:GO, Warframe and War Thunder. And the graphics driver i used was the same as before i changed to the stock cooler.

@Thue500

The only other thing i can think of is to check the 8/6 pin powe connector. May be that it is umplugged and when the card needs more voltage it cant get it, thus it shuts down.

If not i dont know.

Good luck getting it to work!

Hi Lukas, I have sadly tried to remove the power connectors and clean them for dust, but with no luck.

And thank you very much :)

Only time I have that issue is using the pc on balanced power. I have to change the pci power to maximum instead of optimized.
