Missing the old LTT?

So I ended up watching some old LTT stuff and I was thinking about how I liked the ~2013ish stuff more than the recent stuff. I was trying to think about it and I think that it is because at that point the really didnt know what they were doing, and instead of planning stuff out they were just winging it. It was more of a home builder just messing around and having fun then it was a guy trying to float a business. But at the same time I think that a bit of it was that he really didn't know what to do on the business end either (at least not as much as he does now) so there was a bit of worry in each of his videos, worry that the whole thing would fall apart and he would be stranded. Another thing that I could think of is that at that point he wasn't making as many videos, and not putting as much effort into them, so he was less stressed in the production of the videos, he didn't need to get 10 videos done by the end of the week, so he wasn't rushing it, he was laying back and having fun. Not that he doesn't have fun now, but that he is somewhat more rushed in doing the videos, it seems like they have gone from being a fun, profitable hobby, to being a job. It does seem like he is still enjoying it, but it has become a chore, something that he needs to do, and has thus lost a bit of the spark it had. It has somewhat lost the charm of 2 guys in a garage doing what they love, and has become a business. Somewhat in the way that Apple has (though not as severe) how when they got started they were loved because they were not some big company, and how they were just some hobbyists throwing some shit together and got off with something big, where now they have turned into a big corporate business with quarterly goals. I do understand that there has been many large improvements, but I kinda miss the LTT were they legitimately didn't know what they were going to do in two weeks, the LTT where the build guides were just from what they could scrounge up from around the apartment, anot not these things where they ordered in (or sponsored in) $3,000 of parts, and the LTT where frankly you could relate, maybe not exactly, but to say hanging cables all over your house because you wanted more, no, you needed more! I'm not going to say that modern day LTT is bad, or that they should change, but I do think that they have changed into more of a business than a hobby, for better and worse.

I feel the same way. Before they moved to the new office it was much more DIY and fun projects (Like the whole room watercooling, creating the chill room, installing the server etc) now it is just reviews of Laptops and sponsored video's (not that sponsored video's should be boring because the chill room was also sponsored by LG). I also didn't see a computer assembly the last month's.

I feel like the sketchy heatsink videos are just rushed. They are like 5/10 minutes with most of the times filled with b*llshit. With the old DIY projects you had like 2x 15/30 minute videos. Also that gaming pc build wasn't really special with the building I mean like the 10 gamers 1 pc build or the server builds.

you think he was less stressed before? he must have been always stressed out, especially right after leaving ncix.

not know if his video was going to get enough views to keep the lights on AND be able to pay luke. back then, yea it was 2 dudes in a garage. but now they have camera guys, editors, people who manage sales, people who manage sponsers. its not just 2 guys. doing literally everything. now hes just a face for a whole company that happens to have his name on it. the amount of stress for him has probably dropped immensly since he started.

yea his content has changed, its not really worse though. i would love to see some of older diy stuff, but does have commitments to his sponsers to put out videos on stuff they send him. which wasnt as big of a deal as it used to be. 

 

hes all growed up now! im honestly proud of @LinusTech

You're not alone. I miss the old videos, because the old videos were actually informative.

The old videos had information on who actually makes the product, how does it work, why you should care, etc.

These days it's just ridiculous thumbnails because 12 year olds and stupid people will only watch videos if it has a stupid thumbnail.

Almost no info on the product, just what was written on the box in which it arrived. A half assed reviewed, which looking at it feels more like a commercial than an actual review. Especially when talking about laptops.

 

I understand he wanted to start a business, but I do have to say instead of getting what is it now over 20 people in order to do daily videos which are sub par, just get 10 people and upload 3 good videos a week.

What I said is that he was likely less stressed in the production of the videos, he was likely much more stressed with running the business then he is now, but he definitely has more on his plate now

I was just thinking of this too. I used to get excited for the WAN show and wouldn't miss one. Now it's meh. Same with videos. They have a feeling of being flat. Most content that is suppose to be like the old LTT is too scripted and we need more of linus just being linus. Experiencing and struggling with the viewers for the first time. I don't know might be nostalgic but I enjoyed them much more. I think the focus is more on money now so the video have a slightly different target.

When i first found the channel i would watch every single new video that went up even if it wasn't necessarily something i was 100% interested in but now im lucky to watch one per week, i open up my browser and see the click-bait titles and never ending pictures of Linus pulling an angry/silly face and just move on to other content :( 

 

All of this new crap that is designed to pull in new people (its probably very effective too or they wouldn't do it) is turning a lot of original people away i think.
