I am building a entry-level budget gaming PC and wanted to know how much VRAM I needed for my Geforce GTX 1050ti. I am going to play games like Overwatch, Far Cry 4, and some other resource intensive games. I also wanted to know will my processor, the AMD FX-6300 will bottleneck my GPU or not and how good the FX-6300 is. Since this is my first time building a gaming rig, I would love any other tips and advice for building this PC.

BTW does a dual fan version of the 1050ti make a difference?

I have a dual fan version, and even with a factory overclock, plus 130mhz of my own doing, and the voltage turned up somewhat, it has yet to thermal throttle. take that how you will.

Includes a r5 1400 and a rx 460.

When you get the cash, sell the rx460 and go to an rx480/580

I just got in an i5 3570k from ebay for 77 after shipping. even though they came out in the same year, it basically crushes the fx 6300. see here for more details. single core, quad core, even multi core performance, the two extra cores of the 6300 just can't touch it. do some digging, hunt some bargains, and you'll come out with much more machine than you would buying old parts new.

1050 ti isn't really worth it when the 570 is only $20 more. A more valid comparison is 460 and 1050.

i would say at least 4gb of vram i play forza with 2gb vram and it maxes out the 2GB and the map glitches

4GB is fine for prtty much anything, only in some games your profitize from even more. you can watch gamers nexus' video that compares performance of the rx 480 4GB and rx 480 8GB

Although I can acceptably deny their stock cooler's existence.

Anyway, to the thread owner, your best bet would be something along the lines of a Ryzen 5 1400 and RX 560/460. Don't get outdated hardware, especially something like the FX series; there is no future upgrade path and they are trash compared to today's standards. You could alternatively purchase a previous generation used Intel i5 or i7 with motherboard and RAM. It takes a bit of patience and searching but I've seen some pretty good deals. Personally, I would suggest going with the Ryzen 5 1400. It's amazing for the money, and you've got a huge upgrade path ahead.

Both are great options. I would say go with the RX 560/460 4GB as it is bit cheaper. If you were to get the 1050 ti, you might as well spend the extra little bit and get an RX 570/470. The 1050 (non ti) isn't worth it, don't bother considering that.

@DocSwag So I want to stick with the 1050/1050ti so do you know which is better price to FPS ratio? @closetcat thanks for the suggestion but I am maybe reconsidering getting an amd ryzen cpu.

if you're going to stick to nvidia, may as well buy the fastest one in your price range, and as suggested previously, 4gb of vram is more than enough headroom for most games at 1080, the 1050 only comes with 2gb if memory serves. Ryzen is also a solid choice for all around performance per dollar if you're buying current gen hardware.

I personally use this 1050ti, and it's been plenty of card for me at 1080p high/ultra in the titles i play, newest being doom and fallout 4.

The link i earlier posted is a 4gb 1050ti for $130 which seems like the best price. Does it overclocked or do i have to get the OC version?
