Personally used WD reds, they're great. I've also used Barracudas in a PC, and they're decent but not as reliable as the others in terms of a always on scenario.

I'm using a 2TB WD Red in my PC, works great. Read/write speeds are sufficient for my needs.

Quote me in replies so I see them.

IW/Reds are basically equivalent, I'd get whichever is cheaper and if there is a small difference in price then whichever has the longest warranty.

I have 4tb Reds in my server right now and they're easily able to keep up with my needs (plex/storage server).

I'm going to be getting a small 2 bay NAS server at some point in the future and have been trying to figure out the best drives to put in it. Depending on the prices when i go to buy them i will either be using 2 x 3TBs or 2 x 4TBs. I've come down to the following

  1. WD Red
  2. Seagat Ironwolf
  3. Seagate Barracuda

Both the Red and Ironwolf are designed for "always on" environments such as a NAS, whereas the Barracuda seems a more mainstream disk and a higher read/write speed and rpm (which apparently doesn't matter as much these days?) . The main use i'm going for is a general file storage server and backup archive.

It doesn't help that the two companies list their specs in a different way. I'm leaning more towards the Ironwolf but would like to know your opinions, what do you look for in your own NAS's and what drives would you recommend?

Wd red is way to go

the barracuda drives can get seriously loud, I'd go with either Iron Wolf or WD Red, both are great options!

Hi, Official Seagate Forums Team here. We just wanted to say thank you for considering Seagate drives for your NAS build. Where you're going to be using these drives in a NAS environment, we recommend sticking with a hard drive that is engineered and rated for NAS applications. It may not seem like a big difference, but drives that are built specifically for a NAS environment are likely going to give you that longer, more efficient life span that you're hoping for in a NAS environment. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
