Debating Note 4 or Note 5

Flavlus

looking to change my OnePlus One to either a Note 4 or Note 5 as they have both dropped in premium here in New Zealand.

any reasons to get either or are there any other good options for a similar price?

My criteria is a decent camera as the OPO one is kinda bad and a fingerprint reader.

i would get a note 5 but note 4 is better overall in areas of expandability( micro sd and battery) but the note 5 will be supported longer and has a better camera.

The thing im worried about is the fact that they would be used phones and the note 5 would have a battery that i cannot swap out for a new one like I can on the 4?

yup, that's the thing that sucks about the note 5, it's not really a "note", note 4 will be a good phone overall.

Note 4. Note 5 was a downgrade from my Note 4.

No Micro SD slot and closed battery compartment killed it for me when my Note 4 died.

Edit: You can use a Micro USB to female USB to use a flash drive, but as a vet I found dangling drives to be... completely awful...

I have had my note 4 for a couple of years and am fairly happy with it.  Most of my complaints with the phone are verizon specific and I think the note 4 of NZ is a bit different from the US version.

Battery life has been great most of the time.  Calls are good, and before verizon messed up the wifi calling it worked really well too.  I live out in the middle of nowhere and have poor cell service so it was nice to make calls over wifi.  The camera is good in daytime, but not at all good in low light.  The last couple of updates that verizon has pushed out here in the US have killed my battery.  Some days it will go all day with no trouble, some days it can sit there for 2 hours off the charger and its dead.  Today it has been off the charger for 14 hours and still has 45% left.  Its something in the background thats killing it because the phone gets really hot when that happens.  Just havnt taken the time to figure out what it is yet.

I know its not one of the ones you were considering but assuming you liked the oneplus one why not check out the oneplus 3?  It should be in your price range.

Because it's around twice the price of a Note 4 and considerably worse than both the note 4 and 5 in almost every way. I would maybe consider the OP3 if it were $200 and not $650 - $700 used. OnePlus only made one good phone for the price and that was the OPO. That's it. the rest got pricey and still just as budget as the old OPO. At least the OPO was cheap.

Ahh I apologize I had no idea the price was so inflated on the Oneplus 3 in New Zealand.  I though it would be similar to the $400 it costs in the states.

Personally I'd go Note5. I was considering both a couple of years ago, and the fact that the stylus clicks inside the body, the fingerprint reader is better (iirc the one on the Note4 is the stupid swipe down type), and it has a better, less bloated OS sold it for me. Sure, I could root, but I have no interest in that. Battery life was stellar. Camera is great. Couldn't have been happier.

You can still get the battery replaced, it just costs a little more money unless you do the work yourself.

Well, obviously. It's a newer device. You can't really expect something with newer hardware to be as cheap as something that's used, and has been out for that many years. Have you considered waiting to see what the new Zenfone line is like?

I agree the OnePlus phones have been lacking in certain areas, but I think the 3T was a lot closer to perfect and the 5 should be right on the money.
