GoFundMe for GTX980 Guy?

So, I love Scrapyard Wars as much as anyone else here. As soon as I saw it posted I put aside all work (even stuff that was kinda urgent) to watch it, and I loved it. I like that they legit booked a flight just to go get parts, that's the kind of outlandish stuff that defines LMG, and I'm loving it. I enjoyed the video, and am still extremely hype for the next episode, but I had one problem with it that didn't hit me quite right, and it came when Linus was trying to negotiate the 980 down in price. I frequently enjoy the stories that Linus comes up with to get people to lower prices on their products, but this dealing took it too far. He convinced the guy to give him a massive discount by giving him a sob story, and instead of dropping it, really pushing his sob story and how little money he had. I get that it was all for competition, but for a man who had the money to literally book private flights same day in LA tell another guy he could barely scrounge up $175 felt wrong, it didn't feel unique, it just felt like unnecessary heart-string pulling to get what he wanted so he could win a pissing contest against his friends so he could post the video and make thousands of dollars. It didn't feel good, or fun, or in the spirit of competition.

 

So I wanted to get you guys' opinions on this. How many of you would donate to a GoFundMe to send GTX 980 guy somewhere around the difference between the money he got and what he was charging (maybe an extra little bonus for being a decent human being?) I'd be willing to throw in some money as well, just mainly want to try to fix what I thought was wrong. I'm mainly looking for opinions on donations here, not a flamewar about Scrapyard Wars tactics, but if you feel you would not be inclined to donate, I'd be happy to know why.

You actually make a ton of money if you sue after an accident. Look accidents happen all the time, look at your options for a good payout. I tell bums this all the time, but they dont listen. #1 is a car looking left turning right, I just about god smoked yesterday and I went on a clear mumbling tear on some bitch as I rode away. Half the time I dont even look as I have the right of way. A millisecond pause and I step out off the curb. Nothing illegal or wrong about that. Just dont be a door mat and get paid because most people who walk or ride bicycles have a very higher chance of getting hit, which 100% of the time feeling$ are attached and court$ are where you take it.

I don't make donations to people so they can buy non essentials like a GPU. Get a job and buy your own GPU ya bum!

You are right, people can get food from the Soup Line, but their EGO's get in the way. People can also sleep on a 2" mat and inch apart from your neighbor but them bums have EGO's that get in the way.

 

Signs that read "Need Food" I direct them to the bum alley where Salvation Army, Mustard seed and a few others have setup shop. But they are either liars or ego maniacs with an inferiority complex.

 

No donations for anyone, unless I talk with them and get a feel for them. Dont get me wrong, I donate to bums, I did a few days ago. The bum was hammered drinking 12% Big Bear, he was more drunk then usual and we sat and talked for 30 minutes as I want to get a run down of the other bums around, a little chit chat. But I realized I couldnt get far with drunks, so I played along, bought him some slices of pizza and a lighter.

Yeah no way I would donate to this. Not because I don't agree with your general sentiment, but rather, how would you even track down the GTX 980 owner?

 

This would be incredibly sketchy. The only people I would trust to actually run the fund, and manage the resulting money, would be LMG, and if they started that, they likely would just pay the guy the difference instead.

It was a dick move by Linus to straight up lie through his teeth, but I expect no more out of him. The GTX 980 guy in the end was ripped off of $25 his lowest price, doesn't exactly tug at the heart strings. However, I am confident Linus will end up paying for this one way or another. It's a stain on his character and reputation.

Haha, are you kidding me? If you feel that bad about it, give him the money yourself. It's a minuscule amount.

It's also how buying used items work. It's bartering. He could have easily said NO, and that would have been that. He accepted the price, therefore he got what he accepted. That's no ones fault but his own.

I haven't watched SYW S5 yet, so I don't know exactly what happened. Linus made up a completely false story to get a discount?

 

I'm okay with a "white lie", such as "I only brought $200 cash with me", since usually there are budget restrictions. But for him to actually make up a totally fake story?

How much of a discount are we talking here? Someone said $25 - for a GTX 980, $25 less than asking isn't really that big of a deal.

 

And frankly, yeah... if the seller agreed, then he agreed.

He haggled the guy to $200 from $250 for a 980, fair and square, and then proceeded to tell a sob story of how 'he's making a PC as a gift for someone who's lost his job and had to move town and Linus is trying to scrap together PC parts as a goodwill gift with his friends to this made-up guy'. ON CAMERA mind you. It was a totally cringeworthy and scummy move, along the lines of gold digging shit women(and men) get ripped apart on social media for. The 980 guy was obviously conflicted by his own conscience, and reluctantly agreed to a $175 selling price.

$250 down to $200, then a little lower. $15 I think. Considering I've seen many GTX 980's sell for around $220 CANADIAN, it's really not that bad of a price, and honestly about what I'd price its worth at.

Something like a 1080 or even a 1080ti. So I really don't understand the whole "Oh pure guy that had the money for 980 then had the money for 1080 or 1080ti."

 

Was Linus's move a dick move? Yes, it was. But you know what I completely agree with it. If that guy actually lowered the price by that amount and if Linus actually bought it from him, then it's his own fault for being a sucker.

I assume this has to do with Junkyard Wars, but if not, then my statements hold true for the Character of the two.

If Linus told a sob story, then so be it. Its a fucking game. If Linus is willing to fly 100 miles for $6000 to win a stupid game, or spend $500 to fly commercial, then there is something wrong with Linus and Luke.
