GPU Suggestion! Failing R9 290X Lightning Fan.

Keeping this simple. 

 

The 3rd fan on the 290X lightning is failing, it wont start when the PC is turned on and the only way to get it to start is to put the fan speed at 80%. 

 

Option 1: Keep 290X, buy new replacement fans. Cheapest option. 

 

Option 2: Buy a new gpu, RX 580/480, Maybe a Fury? Expensive option. 

 

What are your thoughts and opinions.

rx 580 is almost the same as 290x in performance.

Might not have any months left on warranty, but could RMA it. Otherwise just do the fan replacement, check any loose connections or so.

I don't think it has any warranty left, and I checked all connections and nothing fixes the issue besides running the fans at 80% and then the 3rd fan runs fine.

Interesting, the only reason why I was thinking of the 580/480 was the 8GB of ram.

The 8GB barely makes a difference. Tt'd probs be better to just contact MSI and see what they say even if it's out of warranty, they may be able to rma it or send replacement fans for cheap

I'm wondering, does 'kick starting' it work? When the computer boots, try spinning the fan with your fingers and see if it starts up. 

Either way, my two cents is to just get a replacement fan/cooler.

I'm not talking from a performance perspective but in the case that a game uses over 4GB of ram. 

 

It has happened a few times and I only game at 1080p.

I tried spinning it with my finger and it doesn't start. 

 

When you turn on the PC I see the fan attempt to start but fails and like I mentioned earlier, the only way is to set the fan speed at a high percentage which in my case I set it at 80%

I also had this problem with my 290. Solved it by adding it to my watercooling loop

UPDATE:

 

For those who might be interested in what the outcome is, I ordered new replacement fans. The fans came yesterday and I installed them and... Works like new! 

 

So the 3rd fan was going/was bad.
