RX 570 would be the best choice

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

its better then the RX 470 and the 6GB 1060 gets bottlenecked by that CPU, hell even the RX 570 gets slightly bottlenecked by it. sure the value is questionable but i would say its the best NVIDIA card to get here seeing as the 1050TI gets smashed by the RX 570

https://pcpartpicker.com/search/?cc=us&q=1050+Ti is right in ya budget. You could also get some 1060 3GB cards for 180-250. Tell your friend if he can up his budget by like 50 dollars or something

By then, dont even think we would be playing many games with a regular display, VR perhaps (1080p will be too old anyway, 4K moniotors are already starting to become affordable).

But still poor value, lack of VRAM will start to be a major issue in a year or so. You can also get 580s for just over $200 anyway ($210 or $200 with rebate)

To an extent, it will, but a better idea than wasting money on a 3Gb 1060 and losing performance in the long run (R3 could also be an option if OP can wait a little).

you will be starving for CPU power before VRAM and he specifically asked for an NVIDIA oprion here, the 1060 3GB is the closest to the RX 470 in preformance AFAIK so thats what i said. sure its not amazing value but its the most powerfull GPU id pair with that CPU from NVIDIA

He asked for it as an option, but not the only one (Fanboyism is stupid anyway, get what performs best for the price). Cheapest 1060 3Gb I can find on Newegg is $180, only $20 less than the 580 I linked, very poor value indeed (OP may also opt for R3 for better CPU performance if they can wait a little).

i never claimed it was good value, he just wanted an NVIDIA option and i gave him the best GPU from NVIDIA that wont be horribly bottlenecked(its still going to be bottlenecked) and that 580 wont even get to stretch its legs with a G3258, its not going to be much better then an RX 570 untill he upgrades that CPU, makeing it probably the worst value of the cards suggested here seeing as he has to get another CPU aswell as the card. the RX 580 is a great value card but it does not make sense here

.... i dont think you are reading what im saying here.

he asked for an NVIDIA option to the RX 570, i said the GTX 1060 3GB, seeing as its NVIDIAs closest competator

VRAM isnt really much of a problem unless you are doing stuff that already requires more CPU power then the G3258 has

neither the GTX 1050ti nor GTX 1060 make any real sense here, the GTX 1050TI is weaker then the RX 470 by quite a bit and the GTX 1060 is quite a bit stronger

the GTX 1060 3GB isnt just a 1060 with the VRAM slashed unless you didnt know, its also got a cut down core, makeing it a weaker card.

the RX 580 is great value and definatly one of the best value cards on the market but if its going to get bottlenecked as much as it will with the poor G3258 then there is no point to getting it no matter how good value it is seeing as you wont see a segnificant preformance upgrade, the 1060 3GB or RX 570 will preform about the same for less.

if this is a new build and none of the parts are bought yet then, yes, maybe you can make the RX 580 make sense if the budget alows for it, but if he already has decided on this CPU then there is no reason to shell out the cash for it, CPU chokeing on too much GPU power can be a pretty horrible experience somtimes and thats why its better to have more CPU then your GPU can keep up with.

there is all the argument in the world for not getting the GTX 1060 but it dosent make sense to spend more for the same experience. the RX 570 however would be by far the best value card if you look at both green and red, by quite a bit. also 3GB is fine for 1080p, 2GB isnt really anymore but 3GB is. the entire forum was on fire about this when the 1060 3GB launched if you were around then and its my firm belif that 3GB is absolutly fine. i have never had a problem even running AAA titles like BF1 on my 970(sure its 4GB but i wasent getting over 3GB of VRAM usage) and my GTX 660 is still doing pretty good with 2GB of GDDR5 seeing as it dosent have the GPU core power to push graphics demanding enough to use more then 2GB of VRAM and while the 1060 3GB definatly could power a gameing experience that would requite more then 3GB of VRAM the CPU will be bottlenecked way before and the wait for the R3 chips is around 4-6 months so sure, if OP wants to wait for R3 then you can get way better value but that is to me, quite a wait and if he just wants to play games at 1080p he should just get an RX 570 seeing as it is, beyond doubt, the best value card on the market with the RX 580 in close trail

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

You will get smoother framerates by selling the G3258, getting the cheapest 1150 i5 you can and spending whatever else on a GPU, even if its a lower teir card like a 1050 or older like a 270X / 280X

I had a G3258 and a R9 280X and the difference between using the 280X and something cheaper like a HD7870 was practically nil.. and in CPU intensive games like BF1's online multiplayer, the G3258 was neigh on unplayable.

2 cores, even at 4.5Ghz + with no HT is not enough and swapping from the g3258 to a i5 4590 was the best thing I did

Priority should be to sell the G3258 and get a Quad first and then look at whatever GPU you can afford.
