My cpu is underclocking itself

Roughly two days ago my computer suddenly became very slow. Programs took much longer to start and fps in-game was really poor.

Then I noticed this: 4087587600.png

This means my cpu is running on 1.60GHz instead of 2.67GHz, right?

I think this happened after a recent windows update. So I tried to do system restore but my pc has not made any restore points because my C: is filled to the brim.

Anyone have an idea what causes this?

Try cleaning out your pc from dust it might be thermal throttling

Yeah, I've had this pc for a long time and when I was an ignorant kid I would download all kinds of crap straight onto my C drive even though I have 3 drives... now it's just full of junk I assume.

could you stress the cpu and show task manager on a screen shoot?

Also you should never leave your boot driver completely filled up that does decrease system performance.

I'm sorry I'm pretty much a technoob, you mean I should just start up a game or something? And then screenshot which tab in task manager exactly?

Get CPU-Z from google, put it to stress using it and then screenshoot the CPU tab on the task manager.

Just pointing out that you should leave at least 10gb free space on your boot driver.

These are the temperatures.

What cpu cooler do you have? Your temps should never go above 90 at max. above 90 is very dangerous to the cpu.

Holy motherboard of love, those are some concerning temperatures. It is definitely throttling. Replace the thermal paste, get a better cooler, or clean out some dust. Also make sure the fan is spinning.

Ok now seriously if you use your computer for any game or high intensity program it could literally kill your computer! Make sure to replace cpu fan and put on new thermal paste.

DO NOT USE YOUR PC UNTIL THIS HAPPENS OR YOU MAY NO LONGER HAVE A PC TO USE!

Yes, shut it down immediately, unplug it, and watch this video: (preferably on a different device)

Also, what is thermal paste?

Thermal paste is a grey/white paste in between your CPU and CPU cooler that assists in transferring heat. This is critical to cooling performance, and should be replaced regularly.
