I wont be attending LTX...:(

But i have a good idea or two on what you guys could do

1. 5 Min Build Challenge!

Two People go face to face building a PC (from OLD or dead parts) in 2 cases supplied by a manufacture.

2. Pin the tail on the Motherboard!

Blindly put a GPU in the PCI-e slot on the MOBO.

Fastest time wins!

3. Guess the mouse!

Have several mice in a line, blindly, someone has to guess which is which except there's a twist, theres an actual mouse in the lineup :o

@LinusTech @Slick @nicklmg

These would be funny in a CSF Video.

Anyone else got any ideas?

For my idea I'd allow a bit more than 5 minutes, but I suggest using OLD, but still living parts, AND set up the PC, including installing OS, drivers, software, etc.  Parts used should include

  • motherboards with ISA slots (no PCI allowed),
  • RAM in individual chip sockets on mobo (no SIMMs / DIMMs allowed),
  • MFM hard drives (no IDE/SATA/NVMe allowed),
  • Serial/Parallel peripherals (no USB, PS/2, etc) & the old style keyboard connector (pre-PS/2),
  • and so on. :D

Then install a period-appropriate OS on it and several older games & a few programs.  (I doubt it'd run anything newer than the original 2D Duke Nukem or Commander Keen, though.  Wolfenstein 3D would probably be a stretch, and at lowest settings would probably be about like trying to run Witcher 3 or Rise of the Tomb Raider on an Intel GMA Graphics :P

Install an M.2 SSD AFTER the GPU is installed.  (Motherboard needs to have the M.2 slot immediately below the PCI-E slot housing the GPU.) :P

I like this.  For the build one, they could compete against Luke maybe, at least some times, or maybe the best get to once they're filtered down.  If he has the time for that, that is

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Here's a partial build video (1st in a 3-part series) on a system that's has some similarities to my dad's first PC, the one I cut my computing/gaming teeth on. :)

If it has any of these, it's too recent of a PC. :)

Some games to install and play include:

Spoiler
  • Centipede (1980?)
  • Donkey Kong (1981)
  • MS Flight Simulator 1.0 (1982)
  • 3-Demon (1983)
  • Archon: The Light and the Dark (1983)
  • Alley Cat (1984)
  • Sopwith (1984)
  • Gapper (1986)
  • King's Quest I (1986)
  • Captain Comic (1988)
  • Battle Chess (1988)
  • MS Flight Simulator 4.0 (1989)
  • Commander Keen: Invasion of the Vorticons (1990)
  • Commander Keen: Goodbye Galaxy (1991)
  • Duke Nukem (1991)
  • Hovertank 3D (1991)
  • Catacomb 3-D (1991)
  • Capture the Flag (1992 - Richard Carr)
  • Ultima Underworld (1992)
  • Wolfenstein 3D (1992)

The few with links are to youtube videos.  The rest I was able to find on Wikipedia, although youtube videos also exist for most of them.

I doubt newer games than about 1992-1993 or so would run - for example forget about trying to play Doom, Magic Carpet, Descent, Quake, etc.
