Powering USB RGB LEDs via HDMI or Displayport?

Sin Stalker

Is this possible? I have usb powered rgb strip behind my monitors. I just got a replacement for my malfunctioning center monitor, but it doesn't have a usb port to power the strip. The new monitor has hdmi, display, vga and dvi.

Can any of these be used to power a usb rg strip?

No, because they don't carry power.

I was under the impression that some do.

They may carry USB data, but not power.

HDMI has a 5 volt line but it has nowhere near enough current to power a LED strip.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I went ahead and ran a usb 2.0 extension behind my monitors, with a hub at the end to power the chromecast and leds. Works fine but now I can't turn off the LEDs behind the monitor by simply turning off the monitor. Maybe I'll spring for a hub that has switches.
