Currently have a 1070 and I was thinking of getting a 1440p 144hz monitor. Games I play are: Overwatch, League, Battlefield 1 but I mostly play Overwatch more. I was thinking of buying the Asus MG279Q or the Dell S2716DG, so I want your opinions on which one I should get. I have an nvidia graphic card so I won't be utilizing freesync but its a 1440p 144hz IPS compare to a 1440p 144hz TN and it cost more(in CAD roughly 111$ more). Leaning towards the MG279Q one because instead of buying the Dell one I can save 111$ and that saving would go to a better graphic card.  

 

My specs: I7-7700k, g.skill trident z 16gb 3200 MHz and a MSI gaming x 1070.

I would go for the Asus monitor, just because of the brand. Dell made some really strange motherboards/pre-built systems, and because of that, I don't like them.

 

And well, if you can save 111 currency items... That makes it even moar easy.

My vote goes to the PG279Q. The IPS bump is well worth it.

Just keeping this here as a @SamStrecker Yes it is. When they build stuff which you hardly can modify due to form factor and all (while it can be done with standard shapes/connectors), it's good to place an embargo on their stuff. Even if part of the items they produce/sell don't suffer these issues.

 

And the second reason is a valid reason any day me thinks.

And the second reason is a valid reason any day me thinks.

It's a reason more so to choose certain companies over others. 

Offices usually don't upgrade/modify PCs so their predetermined limited upgrade potential is 'good enough' in many circumstances. I think you accidentally mixed up your feelings when trying to define how you felt about that company.

I guess the Asus because it's IPS but asus monitors have poor quality control so you might need to rma it to get a good panel. Dell has amazing quality control but the panel itself isn't as good as the Asus.

i suppose the mg279q won't be a total waste if you're thinking of selling your 1070 for AMD Vega once it drops and it's any good. 

 

the S2716DG, and for any Dell TN panel for that matter, uses a very good quality TN panel so once you calibrate it, it'll look quite nice. but it still doesn't hold a candle against IPS. bear in mind that the S2716DG, due to its larger size, may have some uniformity issues and slight color shifting. but if your eyesight isnt sensitive enough then it doesn't matter too much i guess. 

 

perhaps you can look at some more choices for 1440p 144hz, such as the ones listed in this link

they're all G-sync though which does ramp the price premium, and it'll only be relevant if you'll be holding onto NVIDIA GPUs for a while. luckily there is ULMB when supported 

 

one monitor that's gaining traction is the Viewsonic XG2703-GS, which is a 1440p 144hz 30-165hz (this is overclocked, which may not always work - otherwise it's 30-144hz) IPS 8-bit panel.

That monitor is good. My only problem is that it cost over 1k in Canada which is a lot for a monitor.

What happens if I dont use freesync or gsync? I should technically still be fine right?

well, Freesync cannot be used on NVIDIA GPUs, and G-sync cannot be used on AMD GPUs.  technically NVIDIA can support freesync, but they chose to go with their own G-sync as a adaptive sync solution, which require a proprietary module in the monitor. this results in more premium monitors, as carrying the G-sync certification require extensive testing and validation by NVIDIA (thus the premium pricing). Freesync monitors also require certification, but it's not as stringent as NVIDIA's. plus no module is needed, only the monitor needs to support firmware in the scaler to operate in adaptive sync mode. so it's commonly known that freesync is cheaper than g-sync.
