i7 7700K vs AMD RYZEN 7 1700

^^^^

My primary usage is gaming but I may learn to start editing videos to earn quick bucks. Also would I still need an aftermarket cooler since it comes with an air cooler for the amd chip if I overclock it?

Well if mainly gaming the i7 would be the one. But video editing is better on Ryzen. At the end you have to choose.

Don't buy a system on the speculation of what you MIGHT do.  In the difference between a 7700k vs a 1700, you really need to look at the bigger picture.  Both are good, but each have trade-offs.  How much do you want to spend on the REST of the hardware? That can make the real difference.

Wahh HALLO. But i7 vs Ryzen 1700 gaming not that BIG of a difference so I think you should go with Ryzen. If u want those extra frames then i7 it is. I would personally go i7.

Last I checked there is more to a system than CPU and GPU.  Are you planning on overclocking? 7700k has issues with that (what I've read, no experience), If you're not running 2 videocards, you can go with a B350 chipset to save money, but if you want to SERIOUSLY overclock you'll need more money for a x370 (ryzen).  Also take into consideration the ram, depending on how much you want to run, and how Ryzen prefers 2 sticks vs intel's not caring if it's 2 or 4 given 7700k doesn't have quad channel.

If you're on the fence, Intel has an announcement soon anyway... might wait to see what replaces the 7700k.

If I get the ryzen 7 1700 I won't need the cooler and that's gonna save me a good bit of money

Having had a 7700K recently, I was not that impressed with its performance. Keep in mind that I don't do 144hz+ gaming, and I'm on 2560x1080 resolution and planning on moving up to 4K soon-ish. So for my chosen usage scenario, a 7700K isn't really the optimal choice. Once the novelty of a 5 Ghz overclock wore off, I was like meh.

Fortunately I have a friend who was about to do a new build with his shiny new 165hz monitor, so I passed off my delidded 7700K and Maximus Hero motherboard to him for a profit. He'll get much more use out of that 7700K than me.

I also do a lot of work on my PC, so the extra cores with Ryzen really were a welcome addition.

Basically you need to ask yourself if you care about 144hz+ gaming at sub-1440p resolutions. If you do, or plan on doing this, then the 7700K is hands down the best choice. However if you want to go with higher resolution, or don't care about 144hz+, then either one will serve you well.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.
