You think i need more juice?

Lynxxifer

so currently im running intel z68 board with a 2600 i7 oc to 4.3, 24gb of corsair vengeance ram, corsair h60i cooler, 7 120mm case fans, 2 MSI rx480 gaming x 8gb and 3 samsung ssd. I am powering it with a 700w and i just dont feel like its enough. mostly because when i use afterburner and turn the gpu my system shuts down. also i run gpuz and it tells me my asic score is high.  I was planning on moving up to 1000w because i plan on doing an open loop and getting rid of my corsair h60i. but didnt want to over kill and not need to.

700w is more than enough for two more 480s, but a lot of 700w PSUs are junk. So what PSU do you have?

yeah you dont need more power

You do need a good psu tho, dont want junk

Something on the tier 1 or 2 list, maybe 3.

They must have PFC.

While your PSU isn't great, it shouldn't be causing you trouble (unless it's dying).

it depends do you want the fan on your power supply to never spin? Higher end power supply's can run with out ever using the fan at low % of there capacity. so if it is a noise issue yes it might help...if no then no your fine

Yeah, I think the PSU is on the way to death..this wasn't one of the good PSUs to get either.

700W should be plenty though. I had two 1070s and my 2700K (4.9 GHz, 1.45v) and the highest I got was 400-475W at rendering load.

yea i got the psu for free it was brand new i knew it wasnt to good of one but for free it got me started lol. but yea it must be dying, everything i read says the issues are coming from my power supply. any suggestions as to bronze or platinum? does it make that big of a difference?

It's just the efficiency and efficiency doesn't speak of quality, but this would be a great choice: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/gYMFf7/seasonic-power-supply-s12g550

Usually my go to PSU is the EVGA G2 or G3 (Try to find the G3 first)....600 or 700W is plenty.

Also see the Bitfenix Whisper M. Its on the same tier and usually cheaper.

An RX480 uses up to around 180 watts, maybe if you overclock a card it would go up to 250 watts or something like that.. so allocated 450-500 watts on 12v for your two cards.

The rest of your system won't use more than around 150-200 watts.  The SSDs together won't average more than 10w, the fans probably use 2-3 w each so there goes another 15 watts, the 24 gigs of ram use maybe 10w , the motherboard maybe 15-20w , and if you don't overclock the cpu it won't go over 100-150w

So overall, I would say you could go for a quality Gold/Platinum 650w and still have some room, but it would be better to go with a quality 850 watt power supply.

Your system isn't a 1000w one, so no need to go for a 1000w or higher power supply. Concentrate on quality manufacturer instead of big numbers.
