Burnt Mark IN the back of the CPU

Hello
Recently replaced an i3 3220 with an i5 of same socket. PC is running fine.
But I noticed some strange burnt-like mark in the back of the cpu. See pics (Zoom out to see it clearly)

The motherboard is a msi z77a-g45 and the i3 was working fine before i remove it.
What are those marks ? does it affect the performance or anything else ? Will the same thing happen to the i5 if it's related to the motherboard socket ?
Thanks

I'm not sure if those are burn marks but looks potentially like dis-coloration, try cleaning off the pads with some 99% isopropyl to see if it rids it of that dark spot.

It could be caused by skin oils. If your cpu works fine, don't worry about it.

A wise man once said, "If it works, don't fuck with it". I don't know what that mark is, but you said it was working fine before. So unless magic blue smoke comes out of it, it should be fine (theoretically)

they don't exactly look like burn marks

use a pencil eraser to clean the contact pads

Now we're talking about it. Could it be thermal paste ? cuz when i removed it I noticed it was badly installed and the paste was spreading everywhere

no. if it was, it would be connected to the edge.

also, the paste doesn't go on the bottom of the CPU

(except in that one gif I cant seem to find.)

  • 2 years later...

signed up just to necro this thread, I got a used i3 3220 that also had these exact markings just in different places! when I saw them first immediately thought the last owner had somehow bunt / damaged the cpu! but a little alcohol the marks mostly cleaned away, can still tell a little if you tilt the cpu several of the pads are still a tiny bit darker than the rest.

tldr been running for hours and seems to work ok, was this just messy users smudging thermal paste or something else maybe oxidization of some sorts? anyone have one of these old i3 and have a similar thing ?
