I don't tend to cheap out on my radar detectors.  The one I'm running is by Bell and its hidden within the car.  It connects to my touch screen radio and my LED Dash array on the car.  The sensors are hidden in the grill of the car, under the side skirts and under the back bumper.  Mine does audio alerts and also displays on my screen what is going on.  Though I don't tend to speed.  Getting to old to do that on the streets.  If I want to go fast, I go to the track to race.

Escort is a really good brand but you pay around 200 USD just to get into the entry level with them.

Be cautious, depending on the state they are illegal to use. California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia all outlaw laser jammers and radar detectors as well (exc. Virginia.)

where I live you can have them, but cops still pull you over for obstruction of view if they see you with a radar detector on your dash, and tell you to take it down.

That's a good point too. I got pulled over in high school for having a cowboy hat on my dash. Technically even a gps can be considered an obstruction.

Just a normal tree one, cops just do that as a reason to pull you over I'd guess, just to see if your car smells like weed or anything. I also live in a small town

They do it because they love the power it holds.

For radar detectors, why do you even need one?

Why not do the speed limit?

I do the speed limit mostly, I've never been pulled over

I live in the country so the cops randomly sit on the road watch speeds, it would be good to know when I can speed and when I cant.

To give you a heads up. If a cop is sitting on the side of the road or even using a radar period, as long as they have it pointed at you, they can have you clocked and locked before your radar dector could even pick it up. I have family in law enforcement, and have done many-a ride alongs and played with them myself. Most officers, especially highway patrol, do not leave there radar on. They will only  leave it on long enough to catch a persons speed and lock it, which  takes roughly as fast as they can move their fingers.

General rule on open highways is 1.5x the limit. I don't like getting up early anyway. The gas pedal is also a very good, cheap anti depressant. And finally, most modern cars are very stable at speeds well above 65.

It's still illegal thoug. If one gets pulled over, don't give the officer a hard time (unless they decide on a sudden search or something equally ridiculous).

1.5x the speed limit... are you trying to get instantly pulled over everywhere you drive?

To put that into perspective, if the speed limit is 55 MPH, you'd be going ~82 MPH. While I'm sure there are some roads where you could get away with driving 80 MPH, probably on an Interstate in the left lane, but still, I would think the Speed Limit on most Interstates is going to be higher than 55 MPH anyway, thus still negating your 1.5x rule.

Some mild sarcasm, though in California, the speed limits are truly treated as more of a "guideline"  than an actual hard and fast rule. It isn't uncommon to see 90 mph traffic on some stretches of roads, which does approach the 1.5x mark on a 65 mph limit highway anyway.

In Ontario, cops don't really care if you're just going 5 KM/H over, even in city stretches. On Highways, you can pretty much safely go 10 KM/H over with little to no risk.

On the Freeway, you can go about 20 KM/H over, but it's hit or miss - if you're doing that speed on a stretch alone with a cop on stakeout, he'll probably get you. But if you're in the flow of traffic, he won't care.

Anything over 20 KM/H will draw their eye though.

honestly, as others have already stated, more often than not, the detector wont go off until after the police have already clocked you. while some of the more expensive detectors (passport/escort) will give you good chances, the cops aren't sitting there with the radar running the whole time. when they see something suspicious, they target it briefly. I've had more luck using waze to alert me of police than any detector i've ever purchased. The only REAL way to fly under the radar is with jammers, which are federally outlawed in the US, so pick your poison. If you really need to satisfy that urge to speed, make a couple passes on a stretch of highway to check for police and road congestion.

does the back up camera jammer work as an excuse

but also if they target other cars your detector will alert you, even from far away

Anyone who willingly does over 80 MPH regardless (with exceptions, blah blah blah) on a public open road is a terrible driver. That's just how I view it. There's no reason to go faster than that. And I'm speaking as a California driver.

Also there are stretches of I-5 and CA-99 in Central Valley are 75 MPH. That's 112 MPH if you want to use 1.5x as "okay"

If you want to be Hotel Sierra on the road, go to Laguna Seca.

IMO, it's one thing to do those speeds with congested traffic. it's a different story entirely if you're on an open road not putting anyone else's life in danger. Not everyone can afford $250+ for 1 day at the track, never mind all the pre-req's for safety and all that. I don't see a problem with doing 80+ in a 65 at 1-2AM when nobody else is on the road. Albeit, it's still illegal, and should be penalized. I wouldn't necessarily say they're a "terrible" driver just because they like to use their vehicle the way it was designed.
