Ultrawide

Schraufabagel

What graphics card would I need to run the predator x34 at 100hz? How many games support ultrawide? I'm curious because I'd be willing to pay the extra $200 over the current cost of a 27 inch rog swift or equivalent Acer.

anything made in the last 3 or 4 years supports it other than resi biohazard but that was by design.

and you dont need sli 1080s... i have a single overclocked 980ti and its more than enough to get in the 80 to 90fps, higher in other games.

even in the very poorly optimised battlegrounds i get 75fps.

remember most people think that to make a game playable you have to have 16x MFAA and theres no other options for AA...

i love my x34, best purchase ive made.

Well this is a cut down res correct? It actually isn't full UHD... So a 1080 with a strong CPU should do it in a lot of games with settings bumped down just a bit. However a ti would help.

No it's 3440x1440. 1080 doesn't get 100 fps at dat res, even 1080 ti not quite.

UHD is 8,294,400 pixels, 3440x1440 is 4,953,600 and 1400p is 3,686,400 pixels.

so it will only be about 32% more demaning that 1440p and about 40% less than 4k

At 4k, 3840x2160 my 280x doesn't drop below 60fps at high in Overwatch. Sure that isn't a demanding game but by lowering the graphical settings in the super hard to run AAA titles, a 1080 will be more than enough to reach 100fps at 3440x1400...

Not always a great metric, some games barely have any performance difference when switching between resolutions, others do.

bro there are games on the market today (such as ghost recond: wildlands) which even a GTX 1080 struggle for a constant 60 fps at 1080p at ultra settings. Certainly that isn't MOST games today, but assuming he uses this GPU for at least a year, more and more games will fit that criteria, and thats only 1080p! 3440x1440 is much more demanding, and 100hz is a much higher framerate.

Is it worth sticking with a lower cost GPU for 1080p 60hz (what I currently have) until the release of Volta? Then when the release rolls around sometime next year, I could upgrade then? Or maybe just wait and see how Vega pans out?

I have no way of answering that for you. You can always wait for better hardware... but then you'll always be waiting for better hardware. If you wait until next year there will be more demanding monitors and more demanding games out at that point as well, so just having a better GPU doesn't really get you any further ahead relatively speaking. I wasn't trying to make you shy away from an X34 gaming experience though, just cautioning that if you want the maximum fps possible with the highest settings possible make sure you are using the best hardware possible

Depends on the budget. Two of something. Doubt a single card would work, wouldn't work for me anyway.  All games will work with any res, almost. Ultra wide is quite common so should be good with any decent game.

Is there a cheaper ultrawide you'd recommend that still handle high refresh rates?

well my 29UM68-P is 2560x1080p80hz using DisplayPort 1.2 and nVidia, it is fairly cheaper alternative and honestly a great deal for its value, also 2560x1080p sweetspot is 29inch, 34inch should be 1440p to avoid pixelation.

on the ultrawide 1440p the Acer x34 seems the best deal for its price, there were some blacklight bleed issues with older models so avoid refurbished but brand news are fine.

well my 29UM68-P is 2560x1080p80hz using DisplayPort 1.2 and nVidia, it is fairly cheaper alternative and honestly a great deal for its value, also 2560x1080p sweetspot is 29inch, 34inch should be 1440p to avoid pixelation.

on the ultrawide 1440p the Acer x34 seems the best deal for its price, there were some blacklight bleed issues with older models so avoid refurbished but brand news are fine.

Cool. Right now I have a 29" LG ultrawide at 60hz. Looking to upgrade to one for 1440p. The only road bump is the graphics required to run it.
