VRAM needed for Gaming at 1080, 2k, 1440p or 4K

What...? 3GB and to a slightly lesser extent the 6GB 1060 are shit value. 3GB is weaker than a 4GB 480 but costs more than some 8GB 480s, and a LOT more than most 4GB ones (like $40-80 more depending on which two cards are being compared).

They're not a good value compared to the 480's.  If those two didn't exist though, the 1060's would the number one recommendations.  There are more than 4 GPU's in this world.

If the RX line didn't exist (i.e. if Nvidia had a monopoly) the 1060 would be even MORE expensive.

I said the 480's, not the entire RX line.  But that's entirely beside the point.  Strictly speaking price to performance, the 1060 3GB is a good deal.  It can run pretty much any game on Ultra at 1080p.  The 480 4GB is a better deal.

I wouldn't make purchasing decisions on the vRAM unless you have very specific use cases.  Maybe you're a graphic designer or you're modding huge open world games to have huge res textures.

 

Generally just look at benchmarks for the card.  I know the 1060 3gb isn't popular but it's still a faster card than the 4gb 1050ti.  Or a better example, the 8gb 470.  It's probably not gonna be any better than a 4gb 95 percent the time.
