Comcast 200mbit

So I had Comcast 105mbit paying like 80 bucks a month called to see if I could downgrade for faster speed, what do they do... give me 200mb and tv for 70 bucks a month. I have a netgear AC router that for some reason has a 100mb lan port and a 4 channel docsis3 modem so that caps out at like 150. 

these are the 3 choices that I am debating on...

($0)my first idea is just to keep it all the same and just live with 100mb even though I can get 200 

($50)upgrade router http://www.microcenter.com/product/454481/RT-AC1200_Dual_Band_80211ac_Wireless_Router

($100)Upgrade router and get this modem http://www.microcenter.com/product/451783/DOCSIS_30_Cable_Modem_TC-7610

 

I just feel like the law of diminishing returns comes in here, I love fast download speeds and work out of home 3 days a week, but my thoughts are that most of the servers on the web cant even provide a 200mbit upload. I think I will start with just the router and if I get the need for speed I can always get a new modem. anyone here have crazy ISP speeds and feel like they actually get that speed or if it is all that noticeable past 100mb?

I have Comcast 200Mbps, and it is noticeable.

file downloads, like movies and stuff isn't affected, but downloading steam games saturates the connection, and It's cool to brag with speedtests.

 

Doesn't Comcast give you a modem with gigabit LAN though? I got one.

HAHAH. Faster IS always better in terms of internet. Maybe if you had 100Gb/s but no one does. My school has 1Gb/s while I have 3Mb/s and I MUCH prefer downloading GTA V in 12 minutes rather than 7 days.

Without commenting on whether or not you will feel the effects (Im still on 8mb down copper :( ), an updated router is always good, you would be suprised how networking tech moves on. A more modern unit will have some useful features, mainly relating to wireless I will admit, but a faster throughput SoC may improve reliability and pings, especially whilst multi-tasking on the line.

Just something to note.

A lot of ISPs, and I believe Comcast is included in this list, are taking the routers they give to people and turning them into public hotspots as well. While I'm sure they have this segmented off from your traffic and bandwidth, I still don't trust them enough to not screw something up big time when doing this.

Because your wasting $120 a year to rent shit Comcast boxes. He is better buying a modem and a separate router. Depending on what modem he has, it might just work fine, I think even 8x4 modems can do 200Mbps no issue.

You are right. If you use their box you have an Xfinity SSID which is a public WiFi signal. And turning it off is next to impossible.

Yep, I don't want to be a hotspot for comcast, I think I will just spend the $100 and enjoy my 200mb internet connection, just because it would bug me if I knew that I could go faster. I will go the 8x4 then probably in a year Comcast will have 600mb internet then I will need to get a new modem again :), on a side note I could sell my modem to my brother who is getting internet installed on Friday, but I have had Comcast throw a fit on me before for getting a used modem. I was told I could not activate one I got off of craigslist because it was on someone else's account.

People on Craigs lists could be selling Comcast modems as well. Like they cancel service or get it shut off for non payment then turn around and tell the modem they were renting. Thats why I will never buy a used modem. I will only get a modem from a reputable retailer.
