Hey guys, I have a 200 Mb/s internet at home, and as you can see in the picture, there's only one ethernet cable coming out of the router which is connected to a 100 Mb/s switch which is connected to the TV box in my living room and my desktop PC, which is in my bedroom, and I ran the ethernet cable through the hole in the wall for the TV wall plug (or whatever). That setup has been doing the job just fine. I don't get less than 90 Mb/s on my desktop PC which is good enough for me but recently I started using my phone more often to watch series and stuff and sometimes the wi-fi is just terrible, my bedroom is the farthest possible from the router and I was wondering what I could do about this. Can I replace the switch with a cheap router? if I could, that router would be in my living room, but still much closer to my bedroom. Also, if I replace the router, would I get the 200 Mb/s on my desktop via ethernet? Given that I'm only getting 90 Mb/s because the TV box takes about 10 Mb/s. The speeds on my desktop with a direct connection from the router are 215 Mb/s.

Many thanks, Bruno.

Better solution would be to replace the switch with a gigabit switch which will allow full utilization of the 200Mbps and then add an Access Point off the switch as well which will solve the wireless signal problem.

But wouldn't it be better to replace the switch with a router? I mean, it should work both as a router and a switch, right?

Not really, you'll have to go in and disable a lot of the functions on the router so they don't conflict with one another, unless you know how to configure multiple DHCP scopes and routing, and you'll basically be making the router a switch/AP in the process but with more overhead if you disable those features.

What about just replacing the main router? I'm paying 27,99€ a month, a couple months later, my ISP launched a new package with everything I got (TV, Telephone and Internet) but only with 100/100 Mb/s download and upload but with an amazing dual band router. A friend of mine claims he gets almost 100 Mb/s around all the house. My ISP won't replace the router (only if I subscribe to that 100/100 pack) and I don't want to do it because it's half the speed. But there is be some dual band routers for sale, what you think? Also, my router has a fibre port underneath the router, where I connect the yellow and green optic fibre cable, and I've been looking up and I can't find any router with that port.

If you call the ISP and say you want the that 100/100 pack, and then change it back the next month, they won't come hang the old modem back ;-)

As others have said, a cheap unmanaged switch to replace the 10/100 one, and an AP for the wifi, or another router even to do both jobs. If you choose to have a second router, you will have to do a little config to the main router, such as editing the DHCP range, and then the new router/AP would have an IP address that is outside the DHCP range of the current router, also turn off DHCP on the new router/AP. You can have them be the same SSID and passphrase so that your devices don't have to swap connections throughout the house, but they must have different Channels from each other, like router 1 channel 4/42 for 2.4 and 5Ghz respectively, and router 2/AP channel 9. Some people don't like this way of doing things, but it works and is a cheaper option for some people too... I have mine similar to this and it works perfectly. Mine for reference is: AP--switch 2--main router--switch 1--switch 3, the main router uses channel 4/42  and the AP uses channel 9 (2.4Ghz only), all of the -- parts are cat 6 ethernet. All of the wired devices in the house, no matter which switch/router they are connected to have gigabit connections and get decent speeds.
