My current PC is running an FX-8350, but I'm going to upgrade to Ryzen when I start my exchange year in the US. So what I'm asking is should I use the FX-8350 for a NAS build I want to do or is it better to buy a cheap Xeon off Ebay? I almost never see FX-series in any NAS builds but I imagine the higher core count could be useful for server usage.

it'd be fine, but would use a lot of electricity and be loud-ish... might want to underclock and undervolt it a bit to save some power and heat.

Higher "core count" FX-wise is not the same higher core count from intel/Ryzen.

 

2 cores from the FX CPU are sharing the same FPU (floating point unit) which is why Intel CPUs seem to function better (applications are optimized for the Intel side).

 

For a NAS, it should definitely work, but the power bill might be a bit higher than if say, you chose and old xeon. The reason you don't really see FXs in NAS is probably because of the platform, and how it wasn't engineered to run 24/7 like the Xeons are. 

 

That being said, they're still fine CPUs and should serve your NAS perfectly fine, as all in all FX CPUs (and especially your model) are perfectly fine.

At idle it doesn't use much power compared to intel of it age, you could even tweak it. Any newer computer will use less power. Would buying another computer be cost effective after you calculate power savings? Probably not.

ill be turning my fx into a hidden backup nas when I upgrade. Yes the 8 cores are excellent at transferring files, you will have at least one core per disk, so no overloading CPU. You just won't get ecc ram.

This is Not true. Yes it uses more power at 100% load but you're not going to be at 100% load all the time and 61C temp ceiling is a low temperature. Don't confuse overclocking comments with normal use.

also loudness is the fans you use not really the CPU. my h100i isn't very loud at all on my 8350.

I meant if at full power draw it would be noisier and consume more power, so limiting the frequency and under-volting might save some power and noise, if that was clear enough for you?

At idle the FX 8350 will use more power and generate more heat than the Ryzen CPU (and as a result of the heat, it will be louder. I replaced my FX 6300 with a Ryzen R7 1700 which uses about 40 watts less at the wall, is around 10 degrees cooler, and I was able to remove one of the 120mm fans from my case. My room also feels noticeably cooler when gaming for 4+ hours.

Thanks captain obvious. Do some maths on power savings. Calculate 4 hours of load and 20 hours of idle, because that is how much a home nas is used. Will this cost more over the lifetime of a WD Red NAS drive than what they would save by buying new hardware?

Well, if it was obvious, why did you question it in the first place? I don't need to calculate it I have several NAS boxes and know how much they are used and idle etc... and I didn;t say anything about new hardware, get your eyes checked bud.. all I said was it would consume more electricity and make more noise but it'd be fine, and that the OP should consider underclocking and under-volting to save some of the afforementioned.
