Hi there, before people respond with dumb comments READ this first!

Build:

AMD FX-6300

GTX 960 FTW

16GB DDR3

600W PSU

I am looking for a CPU upgrade due to the fact that the 6300 is a tad slow for todays games. I am alright with switching to intel but i do not want a processor that has to run DDR4.  I have plenty of ram and do not want to waste the extra 100 bucks on ram. I was reffered to the Xeon 1231 v3 but will this processor hold its ground to todays games? No im not worried about future proofing the rig, i just need a little more power so i can run a 144hz monitor.

Do exactly what I did with my fx 6300. If you look at my recent posts here, I just explained the insane difference from the fx 6300. Buy a used i7 2600 off ebay (90-110$), and a used ASUS P8H61 or whatever 1155 socket motherboard and boom. Or if you want a i7 2600k but will be harder to find the right mobo.

Difference is night and day and a cheap budget upgrade, and you can stick with your DDR3 ram too :)

Well you have two upgrade options as far as i see it, haswell or skylake,

The Xeon 1231 (which uses the haswell socket) still holds up nicely today, yes, and will be a nice upgrade over your FX.

There are also DDR3 boards for Skylake CPU's but do take note that Skylake really does take a big advantage of highspeed ram.

which one should i look farther into?

Yes it does and the funniest thing about it is that AMD's hyperthreading is better than Intel's :D

I know, sell your DDR3 kit. It's not worth it to upgrade to a DDR3 IMO.

Ryzen is the CPU to get right now IMO. I will soon get an R7 1700 myself.

Yeah, this is why the 5.4GHz 1600X was able to beat the 5.9GHz 5820K's multithreaded scores! :D

2x the performance in single threaded workloads and 3x the performance in multithreaded workloads! :)
