Go to solution Solved by Yoola,

1. Yes, you'll definitely feel the improvement

2. You'll have to change CPU, Motherboard and RAM.

3. You'll need to reinstall Windows aswell. Make sure you extract your current Windows key first.

4. Mostly any, yeah.

Hey guys I am wanting to upgrade my pc from AMD Athlon X4 860k to I5 6600k and i have a couple of questions. 1st. is the upgrade worth it? 2nd. If I upgrade what what parts in my current pc can i keep? 3rd. What changes in drivers do I need to make to prepare my system? 4th. I cant find the latency for the I5 will any ddr4 RAM work with the I5?  Edit: My budget for the upgrade is $600

Why would anyone change from AMD to Intel?!?

Also, have you considered Ryzen?

A bit moar ontopic: you need to change motherboard, CPU, maybe CPU cooler, and most likely memory. Because of this, you will need lots of different drivers. I would recomend a fresh installation.

@PCGuy_5960 It's highly recomended. And because he is changing mobo/CPU, from AMD to Intel. Depending on his current OS, it is highly likely he HAS to reinstall. Big chance his OS will be broken/unable to update/fix itself.

if he's on a budget or doesn't want something that high end he could just get the 6600k

Yes you do. Recently did upgrade from FX-8320 to i7 4770k. It just gets buggy.

I upgraded from an FX-6100 to an i7-5820K almost a year ago and I didn't reinstall Windows... The only thing you have to do is remove all AMD drivers....

In that case you haven't installed Windows in UEFI mode, which makes you lose some boot time.

Yeah, but if you uninstall the older drivers you won't have issues...

@PCGuy_5960 Good luck uninstalling the chipset and motherboard drivers... They are one of the first drivers which get installed. (looking at older windows versions, like XP and I think moar modern windows versions do the same thing)

It is... The 6600K doesn't come with a cooler, the 7700 does

Boot times on x99 are hideous at best.  Not even UEFI will help the unbelievably long POST times with x99.

yeah but not really "fair" but yeah lets ignore that. He could save up even more money and go with the 6600 that COMES with a cooler. #Cheaper

And not as good.... And why is it not fair? If you buy a 6600K you are probably going to overclock, and to overclock you need a decent cooler....

Actually, both are cheaper, if you bundle the 6600K with a decent cooler and a decent motherboard. BTW, the Ryzen 5 1600+B350 combo is at least $50 cheaper than a 6600K+Z170 combo!

If you're on a budget OP go look around your local shops/online for used i7's or you can grab yourself an i7-7700 or Ryzen 5 1600/1600X. Those will give you better GPU upgrades in the future.

I personally have an i7-2700K (4 core 8 thread) at 4.8GHz + GTX 980 Ti and it can easily power-up this GTX 980 Ti. That's right a 6 year old CPU managing to power-up a 2 year old high/enthusiast-end GPU. GPU Usage in demanding titles sits around 95%-99% which is great since I'm able to fully utilize this 980 Ti without bottlenecks. If I had an i5-2500K at 4.8GHz (4 core 4 thread), I wouldn't be surprised if I experience some bottlenecks with this GTX 980 Ti as my CPU Usage with my i7-2700K is around 80%-90%. I'm not saying that all i5's are bad but getting an i7 or any CPU that has more than 4 threads helps in today's + future demanding titles, given you have a powerful GPU.

If his on windows 10, and if he got his windows 10 via upgrading this will make him loose his license, with windows 10 to keep your license you need to first hook it up to a microsoft account, then using the same os ssd/hdd boot with it into windows with the new pc to transfer the license from the old pc to the new one.

I just extracted my key and activated it again on new installation. Worked fine for me. But yeah, I think I was signed in with Microsoft account.
