Hey boys and gals,

So, my birthday came and went and now I finally hove the dough for a new hard drive in my build. Right now I'm wondering between a Barracuda 1TB (or 2TB) and a WD Blue 1TB (or 2TB). I originaly aimed for a black 1TB but they cost as much as a 2TB barracuda. So Seagate or WD? Will be used for games, movies, music and other random shit

Both are good, the Barracuda (assuming it's the 7200RPM one) would be a little better for desktop use as the higher RPMs improve access times. In terms of transfer speeds, they're about the same and they have the same warranty (2 years)

Overall, go for whichever is cheaper. If they're around the same, I'd go for the Barracuda.

EDIT: You may get people who say Seagate are bad but they'll be basing that on either misinformation (BackBlaze) or from two specific drive models that have long been phased out.

Any brand of HDD will be fine, it is a Tri-monopoly (WD, Seagate and Toshiba)

The speed is mostly what will determin if the drive is fast or not, get a 7200RPM over a 5900RPM or 5400RPM drive

Cache also matters, but most drives have 64MB of cache, so you don't need to worry about that.

i've had a lot of seagate drives die on me, and wd drives have been very reliable for me.

i would strongly recommend getting a wd drive

Same here. So many Seagate drives failing on me (one was basically new, had like 14 hours of work done) and they just die, this might not be an entirely objective opinion but I will never buy their drives again.

seagates are usually much better, I have bought 3 drivers in the past year, 1 seagate and 2 WD, one of the WD already died and the others acting weird, going to replace them all for seagates.

it doesn't matter, just get the best one you can afford no matter the brand.

You also may want to look at this

If you plan on just storing data and files on it, 5400 RPM is good enough if you're in a budget crunch.  7200RPM (or higher) for programs ideally if you're spinning rust.

Alright, thank you all for your responses! Though the store didn't have more 2tb Barracudas available so I went for a 2TB skyhawk. I know, I know, it's slower and stuff but I didn't want to wait so I just went for it. Now if anyone could help me with a spring issue on a brand spanking new G810...
