I use AIOs every day.  I also use a large custom loop every day.

 

An AIO will heat soak over time.  Simply pointing this out to the OP as AIO temps can be misleading over time.   They will continue to rise over extended periods of heavy loads to temps similar to those of high end water coolers. 

You could try to cool your PC with a radioactive donkey for all it matters to me. I'm discussing the points you raise, not your PC.

 

You said that a 280 mm rad will still "heat soak", which is a sentence that I am not comfortable with. It's not a property of the radiator, but a property of the water. E=mcΔθ. What you could do to theoretically change this is increase the mass of water you're using. A bigger reservoir would increase the amount of energy needed to reach this point. One day I would love to experiment with a large fish tank to see how far this can be pushed (a PC reservoir is nowhere near big enough)

There are guys who theorize a lot of stuff and then there are guys who do.  I'm the latter.  :D

@othertomperson is right.  If you can fit a 280mm AIO solution into your rig, do so.  The 6700k is a great chip and if you've hit 4.5 GHz on your current cooling solution, there's a possibility of going higher with better cooling. 

 

The cooler you run a chip, the less voltage required to maintain stability.  While that shift in voltage is small on any type of ambient cooling, it's still there.

I got a Cryorig R1 Ultimate because I prefer quieter and the reviews about AIO units leaking make me nervous.
