A decent USB 3 flash drive is much faster than an optical drive but either will work.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

There really isn't a difference, though USB is faster. I have occasionally had issues installing linux/ freeNAS from USB that were fixed when using a DVD drive, but USB drives are almost always better.
