So I'm planning my first build and with that I need a monitor since I'm going from an iPad to a real computer. I've got a budget of $800 and luckily my friend is willing to sell me his wifi/Bluetooth card for $20 and 750ti for $25. Later when it's my birthday I'm gonna upgrade the 750ti to a better card maybe amd vega. I can fit in a 4k monitor but I've gotta get rid of a hdd (I was originally gonna have a 120gb ssd and a tb hdd). I know 120 isn't a lot but I can't stand the speed of a mechanical drive and 120 is enough to hold me off until my birthday. I also have to get a motherboard without USB c. And downgrade from the ryzen 5 1600 to the 1400. And get rid of a Logitech gaming mouse which means I'll be gaming on some shit Lenovo office mouse my dad has sitting around. Is 4k worth it? Or should I just stick with 1080p or 1440p?

4K isn't worth that much.

I'd recommend a 1080p ultrawide, or maybe a 1440p panel at most.

A $600 pc ain't gonna run 4K, 1440p will be a struggle. Get a nice 1080p

Ok. I was thinking a 24 inch 1080p monitor with freesync (I won't be able to use freesync for a few months until I can get an amd vega or rx500 series gpu) for $140

I'm not planning to run at that high resolution. In a few months it'll be my birthday and I can get a better gpu than my friends old 750ti. I'm thinking amd vega when it comes out.

For all of those downgrades, no.

All I would do with 4k is for movies/YouTube and productivity. I don't have the cash for a multi gpu setup that can game in 4k.

Ultrawide 1440p is better than 4k in my humble opinion, 21:9 is the future.

But your computer is weak, focus in getting a decent 24inch 1080p.

It'll remain too weak for 4k, you're better off with a good ips 1080p 24inch panel which will look sharper than downscaling a 4k 28-27 inch monitor to 1080p leaving the image all blurry.

If you want a middle term solution buy a 29UM68-P and pair it with a rx480/580 for the freesync at your birthday.

Get a 1080p or 1080p ultrawide. that's it. no higher, because the image quality won't change for gaming (because you wont be able to run it at native res anyway) and it's not worth the compromises.

the pixels will be so close on a 24" 1080p monitor you'll be fooled into thinking you're watching 4k........... anyways.

unless you really need the image quality for important productivity, you should stick to 1080 or 1080 ultrawide

I myself use 1440p G-sync monitor, and I can tell you it's a wonderful medium between the two, but I wouldn't have ever gotten it if it meant I'd have to give up other important parts of the build

I'd much rather have sufficient storage, a better cpu, and a better mouse than a 4k screen

plus 4k isn't quite the norm yet either, 1080p remains the standard pretty much across the board for most things.

You don't need a multi GPU set up, just a higher end GPU with less than Ultra settings.
