2 PC's hooked up to 1 monitor

Quick noob question, can I hook up say my secondary PC to a monitor already hooked up or will I need to disconnect that monitor from my triple monitor setup in order to run the other PC? Only 1 rig would be on at any 1 time if that matters.

You should be able to do that just fine.  If you wanted a more elegant solution, you could look into getting a KVM Switch.

A lot of monitors have a change source button or automatically detect which source is outputting something.

yup monitor has a channel or source selector 

i would make sure that monitor not on auto select mode or could be glitchy

auto select usually has a preference on montior startup, and from there on just does what it's selected to.
