Fallout 3/new vegas/4: 35 fps

League of Legends: 60 fps(and don't need more)

Dark souls: 25 fps

Tomb raider: 30 fps

Dishonored: 30 fps

Half life: 40 fps

Far cry: 30 fps

Portal: 40 fps

Doom: 50 fps

Battlefield: 50 fps multiplayer, 40 fps singleplayer

And pls don't tell me that i'm console peasant.

If average isn't 60 fps, I consider it unplayable and will reduce settings.  Occasional dips into the 30s is OK though, as long as the average is up there.

unless is turn-based strategy where 15 fps average is completely playable. But I personally prefer to do stable 40 than jumping from 30 to 60.

Why so much? There aren't many monitors with true more than 144hz, so you won't get benefits of so much fps.

Reduced input latency at higher frame rate. Even though I only have a 60Hz monitor, I can feel the difference between 90FPS and 200FPS. The difference is more subtle between 200FPS and 300FPS.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Nice list. Maybe I will update this post at some point to put more exacting numbers.

Generally,

3rd person action/adventure games: 30-40

1st person shooters: 40

Racing: 30-40

Sports: 30

Platform (most): 30

Multiplayer: 50

i think this covers some broad strokes, there are always exceptions that require higher frame rate. Interestingly, I find that most of the games are playable at around 30. Now this is just the line where I will not able to enjoy myself and it becomes not worth playing. Something at 60 or higher is what is required to become more immersed.

40 with everything. 30 is just too sluggish.

For me its all about fps drops. 20fps drop from 120 to 100 feels less damaging than from 60 to 40.

I target 60 for everything, but I haven't really tested lower fps since I don't have to. Before I upgraded GPU I was playing Elite Dangerous around 30fps for a while, and that was tolerable but the smoothness helped a lot at 60.

I wonder how low a fps you'd need before you'd notice it on South Park: The Stick of Truth...

just play without vsync, and even at 60 fps input lag will be unnoticeable.

I was more tolerant of it back when I had terrible PC hardware, but these days I generally need to have 60 FPS or very close to it (50+) in order to not feel constantly distracted by the framerate. While I agree there are genres that may be somewhat more or less playable at low framerates than others, I still find it makes games less enjoyable in every genre I have personally experienced.

As I mentioned, I can feel the difference. 60-90FPS is almost unplayable for me.

For me, for any game, 60fps MINIMUM. I will reduce settings if need be. I can feel the drop in smoothness the moment it drops into the 50's and I find it disruptive to immersion. Occasional dips into the 50's or mid-40's is acceptable as long as it doesn't happen very often.

I forced my way through Dark Souls 1 at 30fps only because the game was so good it stood on it's own merits. However, I've gone back to try and play it again, and I just can't. lol.

If the game runs smoothly with no screen tearing, I run without Vsync. If the game has even some screen tearing, I turn Vsync on. Absolutely cannot stand screen tearing...

yeah, it's pretty annoying, had it on Linux (hope amdgpu-pro will work on arch). For turn-based strategies 20+ fps is ok, but i'm goning to agree to vsync. But my pc is weak and I get drops in witcher 3 in novigrad to 20 fps at low 720p. For some other games 30-40 fps is also completely playable

I'm no pro gamer, but I'm pretty good at the game, top 3% good, so I can actually feel the differences.
