Win 7 Home Prem 64bit upgrade to Ultimate?

Keen_Interest

Does anyone know if its possible to upgrade a home prem 64bit to ultimate 64bit, without having to but the whole £145 oem of ultimate?

I ask, because I can get a legitimate, but free, win 7 home prem 64bit version. After that I figure it would be cheaper to upgrade from it, than to buy a new ultimate oem for £145.

So, in conclusion. :P

Is it possible? If so, how and how much?

Thanks guys!

Not for free no since the key is tied to that specific version of windows 7.

The legit way that is.

Why do you want to do this btw?

No, I don't mean for free, what I mean is, is there ANY was to do it. Because you can buy upgrades from like Win XP to Win 7 whatever.. And its cheaper than buying a straight oem of the win 7 version.

And because I want win Ultimate, but I can get win home prem for free. So I wanted to know if there was a legit way to upgrade, because its usually cheaper.

Type anytime upgrade into the search bar on your task bar.

Click on Windows Anytime Upgrade

Click on Go online to choose the edition of windows 7 thats best for you

On the tabs, click on Ultimate

£85 for a upgrade license to ultimate, click on buy and go through the steps.

I heard something about windows anytime upgrade not working anymore now though due to windows 8....but worth a shot to see if it will let you buy a license.

Or you can you know...do the other thing to get it for free.....you already own a windows 7 license, why pay for another one....

Why do you need ultimate though?

I guess I don't exactly NEED Ultimate, but I'm on a university network, at a University that specialises in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. So I'd quite like the extra security features that Ultimate provides...

Just go with Pro. Work just fine. Pick up a copy of ESET Smart Security. Then you're set.

Okay, I'll do that.

Can someone explain to me the difference between Pro and Ultimate, and why you'd want either? :)

My bad, thanks for the link, cleared it up for me! :D

Thanks everyone.

Ultimate is like a gimmick.

Anything in Ultimate you can do in Pro. it just takes some "Fanagaling".

I had Windows 7 Ultimate and i got the Windows 8 Pro upgrade for 30 euros.

I don't always have time to study, but when I do, I don't.

Don't you have access to dreamspark then? You should get a free copy of pro, which would make it cheaper to upgrade to ultimate if you really need it.

Dreamspark doesn't come with copies of windows. You're thinking of either Technet, or MSDN. Dreamspark just comes with Server OS's and Networking stuff.

It used to be called MSDN but it changed to DreamSpark.

Dreamspark most definitely has Windows.  I got 7 Pro, 8 Pro, 8.1 Pro, and even XP keys from Dreamspark.

And yes, the Ultimate SKU for Windows is wholly unnecessary.  You don't even need Pro really, though it's nice to have gpedit.msc when you want to tweak some things.  If you want encryption there's TrueCrypt.

Unless you need more language packs, there is no reason to get the Ultimate version.  The only difference between the Professional and the Ultimate versions are the language packs.  Professional might even be overkill for you.  The Professional version is the highest version that I usually recommend.

Desktop: Intel Core i7-6700K, ASUS Z170-A, ASUS STRIX GTX 1080 Ti, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512 GB Samsund 840 Pro, Seasonic X series 650W PSU, Fractal Design Define R4, 2x5TB HDD

Hypervisor 1: Intel Xeon E5-2630L, ASRock EPC612D8, 16GB DDR4 ECC RAM, Intel RT3WB080 8-port RAID controller plus expansion card, Norco RPC-4020 case, 20x2TB WD Red HDD

Other spare hypervisors: Dell Poweredge 2950, HP Proliant DL380 G5

Laptops: ThinkPads, lots of ThinkPads
