My question is what is hyper threading

hyperthreading is when a processor core is virtualized into 2 threads.

an i7 is a hyperthreaded i5 - the i5 has 4 cores, the i7 has 4 cores and 4 virtual threads.

generally speaking, a physical core is more powerful than a virtualized thread - this is why a quad core i5 is usually better than a hyperthreaded dual core (4 threads) i3. The technology is getting better though.

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

you should edit to the i7 has 8 virtual threads

an i7 has 8 threads, but only 4 are virtualized. the i7 doesn't have less powerful cores than the i5 though. it's just those 4 extra threads that are less powerful - and they get better with every new generation.

So I have a i7 4790k that's good to know. And this is my first build so I don't know a whole lot about computers

It is hard to explain the specifics, because the AMD FX 8350 is a physical 8 core, but the i7, with only 4 physical cores but 8 total threads beats it.

@Ya_Mi's explanation is the most correct, but the upshot is effectively what i've described.

My build is a i7 4790k with a gigabyte ga b85 D3H, msi geforce GTX 1060 6gb,

16gb of Kingston hyperX savage (2 8gb sticks), axiom memory hard drive 750gb 7500rpm and the NZXT s340 case P.s. I am using the stock cooler for my CPU

Why use the 4790k (one of the best CPUs for overclocking intel has ever made) with a B85 board and a stock cooler?

Idk I didn't choose the parts. I had someone else choose it for me. Should I upgrade and if so what should I upgrade to

I'd only recommend an upgrade if your machine is lacking in performance.

Because powerful single core is better. thats why Intel i7 4 core 8 threads beats it.

Its actually amd mistakes back in the day because they are focusing on more count core than more powerful per core.

That is why u are wrong. Intel use terms K on their cpu to describe its unlocked and meant for overclocking.

U need to learn about TDP as well because i7 4790k didnt come with stock cooler afaik as it wont be enough to dissipate the heat from the cpu it can result in thermal throttling and thus decrease ur performance to keep it from overheating.

u dont need to upgrade that cpu is one hell of a badass.

what u need to buy is an aftermarket cooler.

Or enthusiast grade Noctua or be quiet dark rock pro.

This is not how the forum works.  If you have a specific question, create a thread.  We can't just have one thread where all questions are mixed together.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.
