Overclock-able system for only gaming - Is the price difference worth it???

Hi guys,

My friend is about to build a PC which will be used for only gaming. I have a few things to clear off.

I have two system configs - a non-overclock-able one and a overclock-able one. The image in the below link contains only main components and it prices, the other components could be GTX 1060, 8GB DDR4 HyperX Fury 2133MHz RAM, a 240 GB SSD, a good case and a 1080p 60Hz gaming monitor (brand and model yet to be decided upon deciding on the other components).

So here it is!

I have used a motherboard to define the price difference. Just in case if you need the direct conversion to USD, it's $170 (approx).

IS IT WORTH THE MONEY to get the extra juice from overclockable config? Or save the money and invest in other components like 1 or 2 TB HDD, good case fans, 16 GB RAM, etc? (Neither going to buy a card powerful than the GTX 1060 nor going above 1080p @60Hz).

Thanks in advance.

The 7600K is not worth it and the RX 480 8GB is not necessarily better than the 1060 6GB

Hi airdeano,

I just wanted to know the config needed so that I can fix the main components and buy the other ones based on the money left.

OS: Windows 10,

Titles - Mostly racing and FPS games (no online gaming)..

Performance wise, they are within 1% of eachother in DX11 games, and the RX480 pulls way ahead in DX12 and especially in Vulkan. So while in some situations the RX480 is equal to the 1060, in some it is WAY better.

plus, AMD GPUs have features like freesync which are pretty awesome.

in addition, the RX480 is almost always cheaper.

No, not really. The 1060 is around 10% faster in 2015 and older titles. They are within 1% of each other in 2016 titles. The 480 is around 10% faster in DX12 and Vulkan.

The reason for the dilemma between the above configs is that I (my friend) doesn't want to change the CPU/Mobo in far future when the 1060 gets outdated and if the new GPU I'm buying gets bottlenecked by i5-7600K, I can overclock and save the system from changing CPU/mobo. This why we didn't go for i7 (non-k) + B250. i7 (unlocked is way too overkill for us)

GPU CONCLUSION:

Unless the GTX 1060 is cheaper than the RX 480, you should get the RX 480.

All high end GPUs get bottlenecked by the overclocked 7600K. They don't get bottlenecked by the 7700 (non K). THe 7700 will give you better performance in 99% of games

10% better in DX12, but more than 10% in Vulkan*

*if the Vulkan is coded properly, like DOOM

where did you get the data for it being 10% slower on older games

What!?

Where did you get that idea.

plus, OP isn't using a halo level GPU, it's a GTX 1060 / RX 480 level, which isn't bottlenecked by either of these CPUs

He said that the situation hasn't changed much in 2015 titles... So the 1060 is still around 10% faster.

Yes, the cheapest RX 480 is 30 USD costlier than Zotac 1060 (3GB) amp edition.
