Laptop overclocking

Go to solution Solved by Mira Yurizaki,

Even barring the heat issues, you also have power delivery issues. Depending on how much additional power consumption you add, your charger won't be able to both charge the battery and keep the components running at their overclocked values.

Hello!

I've recently joined Linus tech tips forum. I own a Dell Inspiron 15 7559 [base model] for a daily use, and gaming.

I want to overclock it, is it worth the risk of overclocking a pc? Or I should build a desktop pc after a while [When I graduate] ? I'm living in a countryside now that's why I bought a laptop, If you're wondering

Thank you .

i wouldn't suggest overclocking, although i doubt you even can on that model. Laptops are designed with a very specific TDP in mind. Increasing the thermal output by overclocking would likely just cause the hardware to throttle down and potential shorten the lifespan of the system.

Haven't taught of that, thanks.

Wtf are people talking about here. The 7559 has enough thermal and tdp headroom to overclock. Go for it.

Yes some laptops have thermal and tdp limitations like the gl502vs or the Razer Blade, but the 7559 is fine.

Whether u should Oc ur laptop is a case by case basis. I Oc all my laptops because it's literally free performance on the table with 0 downsides.

The 7559 can easily handle a good overclock, just download msi afterburner and +135 core and +500 memory and enjoy about 10% extra performance.

I've got an i7 version of the 7559.

+135 Core / +300 Memory stable and cool

-0.120V undervoltage on CPU giving me an 8 degrees cooler unit with all the horsepower available.

It's not a monster of a laptop but why not get all you can out of it. Guess +500 on memory would work just as well but not much point in going that far since it's limited by the gpu core anyway.

Maxwell mobile usually has a lot of headroom on the memory. Go +500 on it and look for any artifacting (you'll know if you see it). Happy Overclocking!

Funny thing is, I got my memory offset in EVGA Precision set to +500 but gpu-z shows only a +250mhz overclock anyway (base clock to current clock comparison).

You mean the GPU-Z, EVGA Precision or what? :) For the "turbines" to get a bit more silent i recommend checking the powerplan and tampering with Advanced powerplan options (picrel in native language but should give you a general overview :) ). In addition to that you can watch Dave2D's video about undervolting the CPU in order to let it run a bit cooler without lowering the clock (mobile CPU's have got a bit of headroom assigned when it comes to the voltage and as everyone knows, more voltage at given resistance generates more thermal energy).
