Rendering Server

Hi

during the summer I want to build a rendering server

(cpu intensive rendering)

and  I was wondering if anyone knew of a 4 socket mobo and 1 Xeon cpu to fit it for under £250 (don't need to worry about anything else) with my plan being to add multiple Xeons later. 

Also what OS should I use

Unless you really have a workload that needs to be processed as a a single job, then 4 socket servers have always tended to be really shit value for money.

 

If you can break the workloads up into multiple smaller jobs then running a farm of 2 or more 2 socket servers is very likely to be both more cost effective and also faster - this is especially true if you can break down to lots of small jobs and run on desktop class CPU's ... price/performance is much better.

Maybe buying a used server from craiglist that is working or something like that, remember severs are loud

quad socket motherboards aren't good value for money and definitely not under £250 get some lga 1366 xeons I'm using some mid-range 5620s and get similar cinebench scores to a 6700. the cpu's were £7 each and the mobo was £70

get either

LGA1366 and some 6c/12t xeons

LGA2011 (dual CPU boards are available on amazon) and a 2670 (8c/16t)

Some used rack server with one of the above

Would be nice to know which software you will use and what kind of render engine. This would help a lot.

craiglist is barely a thing here, he'll need to look on ebay, as you can get some good deals there, e.g. there has been some quad socket servers which have been going about £100 odd recently, etc. so look there, as it's your best bet at finding anything. other option is talk to your local IT guy he might know where you can get some second hand servers on the cheap

I got one for £70 so it's realistically possible, quad quad core server with 36GB of RAM. Hard drives and RAM are the expensive things here

It all pretty much boils down to: yes.

 

Now if you just want a project to work on, you can get a couple dell r410 servers and load some x5670s in them and form a cheap render farm.

it takes multiple imaged and maps their vertices into a useable 3D object. can take like 33hrs + on an average home PC. (6850K is not home pc cpu tho)

its Cpu intensive

it depends what's on ebay then, as you might strike it lucky and get a quad hexa core with HT for that price or you might get fuck all then, if you can spend the money and use all the power, then look on ebay and as there has been some quad hexa corres servers which have HT going on there recentlyish, and I think that they were in your price range, no promises though, so yea, look on ebay and you might find what your looking for on there
