Hi there,

I am looking for a new high end graphics card... and I'm kinda stuck at this point. So I was hoping you guys can help me with that.

I am running a high end rig and I used to have a GTX Titan (sold it for a good price), bought a GTX780 SC with ACX from EVGA afterwards (but got the chance to sell this as well now lol), and thought since the new 780 Ti & R9 290X are out on the market I'll give one of these cards a try.

But I'm not only replacing one card with another, since I run a watercooled rig it is time to put the graphics card in the loop as well. My loop's got a 240mm and a 360mm radiator, so putting in a single card won't be too much of a deal and I'm expirienced in wc.

I am running at this point just Full HD on a 46" screen, but the plan is to get a 1440p screen.

At this point I am undecided about the R9 290X and the GTX780 Ti. Please no fan boy bashing about brands... I am just interested in your guys honest opinions.

From all the reviews I have seen so far makes the one from Linus Tech Tips most sense for me, cause I overclock everything in my rig anyway.

I do NOT want to go with something like a R290 CF oder GTX 770 SLI! Just looking for a single GPU with beastly power under water.

I'd wait for Slick's results of waterblocked 290/290x's.

Sure the 780 Ti has more horsepower but the memory bandwidth, vram, and pricing is what makes me look at the 290.

We have no way of knowing which cards will be better under water yet.

With the stock coolers the 780ti destroys the 290x, but the 290x doesnt have any room to stretch its legs due to a bad stock cooler and higher power draw.

Wait till we get linus and lukes benchmarks of the cards under water before making your decison.

If you dont need all those Nvidia features then go for 290x... But if you can spend more and you want those features go for 780Ti... I read what you said but 290 CF for 100$ more than 780Ti is way way better...

Yeah true, but since there are no tests with wc yet it is hard to determine what makes mose sense... and there is the mantle ghost out there which makes the decision really not so easy.

I heared about bad overclockers when it comes to the R9 290X.. even Linus had a bad sample, which kinda surprised me.

The 780 Ti has beastly power even with its standard cooler which is great and I am tending to wait for a screen with G-Sync, but like I said this mantle thing, and that no body is sure what it can or will do... if it would be just for games like BF4 I wouldn't care too much but it will be available in Star Citizen as well...

But then I am not sure if my PSU (Corsair AX860) will be strong enough... and a CF for a single screen... it won't be 4k so this doesn't make sense for me.

It depends, if you plan to game at resolutions above 1600P you'll want a 290x, the 780TI doesn't have enough VRAM, If you plan to game at 1080p or 1440p than the 780 TI would be the best bet, however we haven't seen the benchmarks from an unbiased source around how both cards do under water.

The 290x is only a bad overclocker due to the restrictions of the sock cooler. It throttles itself when it hits the 95oC threshold. We dont know yet how it will preform with better cooling. It could be an amazing overclocker

Don't crossfire Radeon cards if you only have 850w. Just get the 780ti, but with the way you seem to handle your cards, you'll probably sell it lol

True... this card would be number 6 ! this year... usually I use nVidia cards to be honest but since AMD has a nice card as well I am a little bit stuck. If mantle would not be coming up... I probably would have already ordered the GTX 780 Ti.

When is Slick comming up with a wc review of the R9 290X ?

In that case you are most likely best off to turn off crossfire and use only one GPU. If one GPU can't run skyrim at max settings 120fps, idk what.

Thanks but I do not need a link ;) . If I want the card I'll order it NOT at Amazon, their prizes aren't that good.

And I think I will buy both of them and compare them in my own rig with my own water cooling. These numbers will be as good as I need them to decide which of these cards will stay in my gaming rig and which will go into my new computer that I build up for my living room. Cause this will grant me the exact same system reference data and even if mantle would be really good I have a R9 290X :D .
