I'm debating on whether to get a 7700k or a 6700k. I've heard that the 7700k has some temperature issues compared to the 6700k so idk if its worth getting a 7700k if the temperatures are really bad and i cant overclock very much. i mean if i can get a 6700k and overclock it to a 7700k and have the same or better temps than a 7700k then why would i pay the extra 20 bucks for the 7700k. I'm really not sure how much of an issue the temps on the 7700k but I don't really plan on getting a super beefy cooler but I also don't plan on overclocking it a ton. so i guess the real question is will i be better off getting a 6700k and overclocking it or get a 7700k and see if i get lucky with the temps. also i will not be delidding my cpu so that is out of the question.

I was about to type out something about why the 6700K was kinda better in this situation, but then I realized what you said. 7700K has minimal thermal issues because of how high it is clocked. Compared to the 6700K it will look like it has thermal issues. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is right.

I'm in the us. my budget is no more than 540 bucks and I will be only upgrading the cpu motherboard and ram. the use case is gaming primarily and some CAE programs like ansys. I'm currently looking to get all of the components from microcenter. most likely i will have to get a new cpu cooler because i lost the pars for the intel mounting on my current one.

i had heard that the 7700k was giving somewhere around 10 degrees hotter than the 6700k at similar clocks. this was from the gamer nexus video so it is only one case so i was wondering if anyone knows more about the subject.

Oh I guess I was wrong, yeah I would like to know more about this too

The skylake and kabylake chips are using the same crappy TIM so I'm guessing the kabylake is only noticeably hotter because its already clocked higher.

If you OC the skylake chip you'll probably be in the same boat anyways

It doesn't sound like you're worried about max potential so get a 6700k.  Save a buck and run slightly cooler.  6 months down the road, if you decide to overclock, you'll wish you would have bought a 7700k.  If not, you'll never miss it.

If you are just going to get a mobo, CPU and RAM for $540, I actually suggest getting a skylake i7-6700K at microcenter instead. They are on fire-sale right now and you can get a discount on your motherboard. Just looking at their website you can get an i7-6700K + MSI Z170 krait motherboard for $350. Then you could probably get 16GB of RAM for another $100 and then get a high-end cooler like the Noctua NH-D15 and do some overclocking. After all that, you would still have a little cash left.

Yup, my friend messaged me earlier today. He got a 6700K for $110 at Microcenter.

yeah i was thinking something similar to this. i'm not sure if i'm going to decide to overclock so its a bit of a dilemma

that's weird i had thought the price of the motherboard was already discounted but for some reason the total was higher than 20 bucks more for the 7700k vs the 6700k. it said it had been discounted when it was in the cart with the 7700k but it must have been an error

not according to the gaming nexus review. the 7700k was about 6 degrees hotter when both clocked at 4.5ghz.

It's not really a big dilemma.  Grab a 6700k and build your rig.  It's a great chip.  If you aren't already into overclocking, the 6700k will more than likely clock high enough for you.  Some of us just wanted to push 5 GHz and higher and were willing to back it with cooling.

yeah I think it seems like a better idea to just get a 6700k. I mean i like the idea of overclocking but it isn't like i cant overclock the 6700k.

Yea and in the end they state it could just be due to per chip lottery and they had BIOS problems while testing. In the end though Intel still cheeped out on the TIM and any temp differences are marginal at best for most use case scenarios. It's best to just go with whatever you can find a good deal on ^_^

yeah that could be true but there were alot of similar complaints across most of the 7700k reviews so i thought that kinda confirmed it. although it could have been a particularly good 6700k
